Anis: Disasters, flood, heatwave, global warming, wildfire, landslide and the list
goes on. Many lives are at stake. Losing your loved ones is irreplaceable. Mother
Nature is pleading for help. Let us not turn a blind eye. It's high time for us to
play a vital role as we are guardians of green.

Yu Zhen: It's windy here.

Hui Zhi: Yes, it's lucky to have trees around here. Hey, Yu Zhen! It’s there Guan
You and Anis?

Yu Zhen: Yes, it’s look like them!

Yu Zhen: Hi guys!

Hui Zhi: Hi, It’s good to catch up with you guys.

Yu Zhen: This is a great place to hang out.

Anis: Yes, you’re right. We are privileged to still be able to experience this green
surrounding.

Guan You: I'm sure this is not possible, if not for guardians of green.

Yu Zhen: Guardians of green?

Anis: Yes, have you not heard of them?

Hui Zhi: There are individuals, communities, and organizations who dedicate
their lives to protect and preserve our environment. They are the unsung heroes,
the stewards of nature.

Guan You: They are the guardians of green.

Yu Zhen: That sound interesting!

Guan You: However, it is tough to make people realize the effect of neglecting
our green.
Yu Zhen: I agree. One of the most significant effects is global warming caused by
deforestation. Can you believe that, every hour, forests the size of 300 football
fields are cut down. By the year 2030, the planet might have only 10% of its
forests, if deforestation isn’t stopped, they could all be gone in less than 100
years.

Anis: Since the 1880s, it has been linked to human industrial and vehicular
emissions that have led to an increase in carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere.
Temperatures around the globe are expected to increase, and many areas will see
a decrease in their water supplies. On the other hand, in Antarctica, climate
change will be the melting of sea ice and wipe out entire populations by 2100.

Hui Zhi: That sounds scary! Other than global warming, deforestation also
increases the risk of flooding by reducing the ability of the earth to absorb and
handle extreme weather patterns. The absence of trees removes this natural
barrier and makes the ground less able to soak up water, leading to more runoff in
water bodies. These devastating floods can displace populations, damage
property, and in severe cases, lead to loss of life. Therefore, it is extremely
important to promote reforestation to reduce the impact of flood damage.

Guan You: Yes, that’s true. I agree with your points! The concrete jungle can’t
soak up rainwater, so in heavy downpours, it has nowhere to go except into
drains, overloading them and setting off flash floods. The benefits of trees don’t
stop at slowing water flow. Trees also clean the water and improve its quality.
When trees soak up water through their roots, they can keep toxins and pollutants
from going into drinking water by releasing them as a gas through their leaves.

Yu Zhen: Besides global warming and floods, deforestation also causes

landslides because trees help stabilize soil with their roots. When trees are
removed, soil becomes more prone to erosion, leading to landslides during heavy
rains or storms. The loss of forest vegetation leads to a reduction in soil cohesion
and a decrease in the shear strength of the soil profile.
Anis: That sounds terrible. Moreover, deforestation leads to wildfires because it
removes the natural barriers that help prevent the spread of fires. Trees act as
firebreaks and retain moisture, making the environment less susceptible to
ignition. Without these barriers, the landscape becomes drier and more prone to
wildfires.
Hui Zhi: Therefore, the green environment is our most potent weapon against
climate change. Forests, oceans, and wetlands absorb vast amounts of carbon
dioxide, helping to regulate the Earth’s climate.

Yu Zhen: With all the talk about global warming, floods, landslides and
wildfires, it feels like we should do something, right?
Hui Zhi, Guan You, Anis: Yes, you are right!

Hui Zhi: Being a guardian of green means taking responsibility for the health of
our planet. It’s about taking action to preserve our natural world for future
generations. So, let’s start planting trees and gardens to improve air quality and
also provide habitat for wildlife.

Guan You: Besides, the 3Rs which are reduce, reuse and recycle are the most
effective ways to minimize our environmental footprint. Recycling materials like
paper, plastic, glass, and metal can reduce the deforestation for the manufacture
of various materials.

Anis: To become guardians of green, we must also educate ourselves.

Knowledge is power when it comes to environmental conservation. Take the
time to learn about the issues facing our planet and the solutions available to
address them.

Hui Zhi: As guardians of green, we should support conservation efforts, become

volunteers for local conservation projects, participate in beach or park clean-ups,
and support wildlife conservation organizations financially or through volunteer
work, this definitely improves the effectiveness of protecting the green.

Yu Zhen: Conserving the energy also plays a significant role in protecting our
green. We should turn off lights, electronics, and unplugging charges when not is
use.
Yu Zhen: Anis! Not again!
Anis: Why? What’s wrong?
Yu Zhen: You are forget to switch off the light!
Anis: Oops, I’m sorry. Thank you for reminding me.

All: Together, we can protect and preserve the natural world for generations to
come.

Guan You: Join us. Become guardians of green!
