INTRODUCTION
Note Making is a tool used to systematically write down things quickly and
briefly in such a way that a person does not miss out on the important points.
It involves and tests both reading and writing ability of the user. It is a special skill
that is very useful to students and working professionals.
It enables one to compress a large piece of information into a BRIEF,
ORGANIZED and SUMMARIZED piece which can be referred to when require
d. The process of grasping knowledge is vast and unlimited. Our memory is not
able to store so much information altogether. Hence, making notes is quite handy
and helpful. With the assistance of note making, we may recall the entire
information. For the students, it makes their preparation less strenuous.

Types of Note Making:
There are various ways of making notes. Each format has its own d
isadvantages and limitations.

Features of Note Making
• a TITLE/HEADING
• proper INDENTATION to distinguish between Main and
Supporting points
• To be divided into SUB-HEADINGS and SUB-SUB
• HEADINGS
• The number of Sub-headings is usually four/five
• KEY/ABBREVIATIONS (such as NCERT, DOE and SCERT)
Simple Rules to proceed:
• Read the passage carefully.
• While reading the extract, underline the important key sentences. It helps in the format
ion of the titles and subtitles.
• Have a heading which indicates the main idea behind the passage.
• Subheading: A heading is often divided into various parts. Subheadings are used to ind
icate that.
• Each subheading involves points in brief.
• Write sub points to express the main contents.
• After sub points, write sub- sub points for better expression of rest of the contents.
• To write Heading, Subheading, Sub Points and Sub-sub points, different ways are ther
e. Suitable space and numbers are used for better presentation.
• A logical sequence is maintained.

Abbreviate whenever possible
SYMBOLS(such as %, &, @)
• SHORT FORMS (such as govt.)
• At least four abbreviations; max 7
• Examples and quotations not be a part of the Note
• brief: a key phrase for a sentence; a word to represent a
• phrase
• No Long and complete sentences
Abbreviations and Symbols can be
used in the following manner:

a) Well-known abbreviations (WHO, SCERT, NCERT, CBSE


)
b) Symbols (e.g., i.e., etc, &, %}
c) Self-created abbreviations (Govt., Pvt., Ltd., S.St.)
d) Self-created contractions (prblm. – problem;
e) rqd. – required; edn. - education
Points to Remember
•No use of grammar.(articles, prepositions and conjunctions are omitted)
•No usage of full sentences. Use only phrases.
•Should be precise and to the point.
•Notes should have all the important and relevant information of the extract.
•All information should be systematically divided and sub divided.
•The main title should be short and apt according to the extract and should reflect
the essence of the passage.
•Notes should be written in points and be listed one after another and be numbered
properly.
•Not to include irrelevant parts of the extract while taking down notes. Better to
complete in one page to make it presentable.
•Title to be written at the top or bottom of note making.
•Key to abbreviations: to be written at the end of note making, inside a box.
Summary Writing

•The summary should be 1/3 of the actual length of the article.


•The summary should have the points mentioned in the notes.
•The summary should have only one paragraph.
