Past Simple + Past Continuous


Simple Past
Regular Verbs:

• Work – Worked
• Arrive- Arrived
• Study – Studied
• Play - Played
Regular Verbs:

If the verb ends in a consonant Work – Worked


Add –ed Listen – Listened
Start – Started
If the verb ends in a vowel Arrive- Arrived
Add only –d Love – Loved
Like – Liked
If the verb ends in a consonant + y Study – Studied
Change the y to i and add ed Try – Tried
Marry – Married
Irregular verbs:

The use of the simple past
• Finished events in the past.
Ex:
• Christoph Columbus discovered America in 1492.
• I visited them every day for a year.
Change the verbs below into the past simple and put
them into the correct place in the sentences

What were you doing yesterday evening?


The negative form:

I, he, she, it was not / wasn't playing.

you, we, they were not / weren't

I wasn't reading a book yesterday evening; I was watching a film.


Uses of the past continuous
We use the past continuous to refer to an action that was continuous (i.e. an action that
was going on) at a particular time in the past.

"This time yesterday, I was doing my homework."


Uses of the past continuous
We use the past continuous to say that something happened in the middle of
something else

• Bob burnt his hand when he was cooking dinner yesterday


• Yesterday evening I was watching a film, when someone knocked on the door.
Yesterday at 6 pm your family were doing different things.
Write positive sentences in past progressive(continuous).

• My mother / read / a novel.


• My father / watch / TV.
• My elder sister / write / in her diary.
• My two brothers / listen / to the radio.
• My little sister and I / talk / about school.
• My mother / read / a novel. My mother was reading a novel.
• My father / watch / TV. My father was watching a movie.
• My elder sister / writing / in her diary. My elder sister was writing in her diary.
• My two brothers / listen / to the radio. My two brothers were listening to the radio.
• My little sister and I / talk / about school. My little sister and I were talking about school
Put the verbs into the correct form (past
progressive or simple past).
• When I (phone) my friends, they (play) monopoly.

• I (practice) the guitar when he (come) home.

• I (arrive) while They (play) cards.


• When I phoned my friends, they were playing monopoly.

• I was practicing the guitar when he came home.

• I arrived while They were playing cards.
