(Conditionals) IF = SE

(Zero Conditional – present x present):


If I warm up the water, it boils.
Water boils if I warm it up
Water doesn’t boil if I don’t warm it up.

(First Conditional – present x future (will)):


If I work hard, I will be promoted
I will be promoted if I work hard.
I won’t be promoted if I don’t work hard.

(Second Conditional – past simple x Modal):


If I worked hard, I would / could be promoted
I could be promoted if I worked hard.
I couldn’t be promoted if I didn’t work hard.

(Third Conditional – Past Perfect x Modal + present perfect):


If I had worked hard, I would / could have been promoted
I would have been promoted if I had worked hard.
I wouldn’t have been promoted if I hadn’t worked hard.
