Lesson 2 Memory

Computer memory consists of components that store data temporarily or permanently, serving functions of data storage and program execution. It is categorized into primary memory (RAM and ROM) and secondary memory (like hard disks and SSDs). Additionally, the document explains the roles of the processor, motherboard, and types of software, including application and system software.

1. What is computer memory?

Ans: Computer memory refers to the components in a

computer system that store data, either temporarily or
permanently.
Memory serves two functions:
1. Data Storage: Memory stores data and instructions and
provides quick access to them as needed by the processor.
2. Program Execution: Allowing the processor to easily and
quickly follow the program's instructions.
2. What are the types of computer memory?
Ans: Computer memory is mainly of two types:
1. Main or Primary Memory: This is temporary memory. It's
directly connected to the processor and is used for fast data
access and processing.
2. Auxiliary or Secondary Memory: Auxiliary memory is
permanent memory that stores data for the long term. It's not
directly connected to the processor. It's slower than primary
memory.
3. What are the types of primary memory?
Ans: Main or Primary Memory is of two types:
1. RAM (Random Access Memory): It temporarily stores
data and programs. All data in RAM is erased when the
computer is turned off. Example: SDRAM.
2. ROM (Read Only Memory): It permanently stores data. It
is used to load important instructions when the computer
starts.
4. Different type of Storage devices?
Ans:
1. Hard Disk: A hard disk, or hard disk drive (HDD), is a data
storage device that uses magnetic platters to store and
retrieve digital information.
Characteristic:
i) It stores data using magnetic platters.
ii) It uses spinning disks to access data.
iii) It typically offers a large amount of storage space.
2. SSD= A flash solid-state drive (SSD) is a non-volatile
storage device that stores persistent data in flash memory.
The characteristics of SSD:
i) Fast read/write speeds.
ii) Lower power consumption.
**Flash memory: Flash Memory is a electronic non volatile
storage medium that enables data to be erased and
reprogrammed electrically.
3. Flash drive : A USB drive or flash drive or memory stick,
is a small, portable device that plugs into the USB port, are
commonly used for storage, data backup, and transferring
files between devices.
4. What is Processor?
--A processor (CPU) is the brain of a computer. It controls
and performs all the tasks and calculations.
Functions of a Processor are given below:
1. processes data and runs programs
2. follows the commands from software.
3. reads and stores data in memory.
4. controls input/output devices.
5. What is Motherboard?
--A motherboard is the main circuit board in a computer. It
connects all the parts of the computer, allowing them to
communicate with each other.
Functions of a motherboard are given below:
1. connects the CPU, RAM, storage devices, and other parts.
2. Supplies power to various components of the computer.
3. processor is installed on the motherboard
4. Allows data to flow between different components.
6.What is software? How many types it has?
Ans: A set of programs is called software.
There are 2 types of software:
Application Software:
Software that used to get the computer to do different task.
For example: Excel, Spreadsheet etc
System software:
Software that boots the system and allows the application
software to work with hardware. For example: operating system
