Final Essay - Combining the patterns
“Technology Addiction”
INTRODUCTION
Is technology addiction actually a real thing? It certainly is considering that people all
around are addicted and it affects the moods and health of all. Nowadays people are more into
their phones than into the real world. They don’t want to get out of the house and go explore and
just live in the moment. People can get addicted to things very easily especially whenever it is so
easy to access and have right in front of you. Addictions are not only from drugs and alcohol, it
can also be found in your day to day lives through technology.
DEFINITION
Technology addiction is excessive use of electronic devices. Being this addicted to
electronics can lead to problems and cause extreme levels of stress. The basic aspects of
technology addiction can be the excessive time that will be spent online, panicking whenever the
person is unable to have access to technology, and experiencing negative interactions with peers
in social gatherings because they are glued to the technology. The definition of technology
addiction could apply to phones and video games. These could be examples because while being
on the phone you are connected to social media platforms. Majority of the platforms that are
commonly used among many can cause severe depression for all ages. Video games don’t
necessarily cause stress as much for people but it can influence behavior that can be seen as

violent. Playing games that have violent activities can lead people to think that it is okay to be
aggressive and violent towards others outside of the game. In this generation, we are addicted to
phones, video games, and TV. Most people now have phones to have social media apps such as
Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat, and dating apps. Within the past decade, Tiktok has become a
social media source almost everyone uses on a day to day basis. Snapchat and Instagram are still
popular but definitely not as much as they used to be and not as much as Tiktok is.
COMPARE
Technology addiction can be compared to alcohol addiction because once you get so
addicted to it, it’s very hard to stop and drop everything. With technology if you download apps
that are addictive then it will be hard to stay off of the technology. Alcohol is addictive whenever
you are drinking it all the time. It can be the same thing with technology because if you are on it
constantly then you are always going to be longing to be on it. Even though technology won’t
impact your liver health it can still impact health in general. Mental health is a big thing now
especially in men.
CONTRAST
Technology has become such an important factor in our lives today because of how
simple it is for us to get in contact with people all around the world. In one connection from a
telephone pole to space and then back to another phone poll where we are trying to contact, we
can have phone calls right then with significant others at any time of day.
CAUSE & EFFECT
Too much usage of technology causes lots of stress. It can be a constant distraction not
allowing you to fully concentrate and relax. Having an addiction to technology causes disruption
to sleep, causing you to stay up late hours of the night. This does not allow you to be able to get a
3Hines
peaceful sleep because of the urge to check your phone so much. Social skills for kids are going
to start to get worse because they are going to be so zoned into their phone. They are going to
have trouble knowing how to properly communicate with others in person. Dependence on
technology has increased as it has improved over the years. Technology is much easier to use to
get answers fast and correct. It is also used as the best way to communicate with family, friends
and loved ones that don’t live near you.
NARRATION
From my personal experience I was severely addicted to my phone. It has gotten to a
point during COVID-19 that I was on my phone the majority of the day. I was getting no sleep
and was extremely stressed with school about turning work in on time. I eventually had
completely forgotten about school because it was too much for me to handle and I stopped
turning assignments in. My grades began to drop and I was failing in several classes. I eventually
brought up my grades but still ended up having to take summer school for English. I definitely
learned my lesson my freshman year of high school and had realized the problem did revolve
around my phone. My parents began taking my phone after 10PM and it allowed me some
downtime to focus entirely on my schoolwork. I hated it at the time but I am appreciative that
they did do that because it benefited me in ways I didn’t think would.
ARGUMENT
Our everyday lives are being changed by the second because of technology. We are
developing technology that can hopefully benefit us in the future. I believe that at some point
here in the future we are going to have robots doing work for us. People will no longer have jobs
because they will be released due to technology being more intelligent than humans. Artificial
Intelligence has also been created which can do basically anything you ask. Many people have
4Hines
abused it because they will use it to cheat in school even though it can be used to help effectively
improve people's learning. AI can be used to help answer questions that you may have to help
with studying and improving education levels. Technology is also a huge factor with social skills
because it can be positive and negative. Some people have a hard time communicating with
others in person so online they can find people who have the same issue and they can relate to
them. In some cases it can be negative because people will be so consumed in their phones that
they will not realize what is going on around them.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, technology has its benefits and disadvantages. It can be addictive and
helpful. In this time we are all using technology, whether it’s to watch TV or to just communicate
with friends and family. Addictions do come from technology especially for the people who are
on it all the time and cannot live without it in their daily lives. Disconnecting from technology
and stepping outside to get fresh air ever so often to just be by yourself can help improve mental
health.
