Introduction

1.1I will be talking about cyberbullying in our community most of this bullying
can be worse in community because almost most of the people do not
care of this cyberbullying that is going on because in the good old days,
bullies had to actually chase you down the hallway welcome to the world
of cyberbullying where insults come with hashtags, threats are sent via
DMS. Cyberbullying is a serious issue hiding behind a wall of means and
anonymous username Hout bay can be a better place if the community
stand together and let the police take the children who bullying other
parents’ children and so that they can learn not to bullying other children.

1.2The legal frameworks in South Africa that address cyberbullying of bullying

act is to prevent bullying and to protect students and encourage them to
seek assistance if they are being bullied. The popl act in South Africa
protects your privacy by establishing rules for how organizations and
individuals can collect, process and use your personal information it
ensures transparency, requires consent rights to access correct, and
delete your data.

1.3The impact on learners’ academic performance can also be poor

concentration because it will affect them and their work low academic
achievement cyberbullying can affect your works increased absenteeism
most of the learners stay out of school because of bullying and the main
thing is that do not have motivation and self – esteem because they have
been bullied the whole time.

1.4The effects of cyberbullying on a learner metal wellbeing are anxiety and

depression it will feel like you want to do nothing anymore you feel like
want to kill yourself you get the feeling of isolation you want to be alone
do not want to be around friend. Because you just want to be alone
cyberbullying can give you stress and trauma because you do not talk to
anyone about this if you do not talk to anyone about this it can lead to
more and more serious conditions.

3
Activity 2: REVIEW OF LITERATURE
2.1) Cyber savvy is a personal information because important data
online can lead to identify theft because then the theft will know what is
going on in your life. Being cyber savvy involves understanding online
privacy and digital information and to protect yourself online you can take
control of your digital life by using strong passwords, keeping your
software up-to-date.
2.2) Social media footprint- Is when they make comments about you
that not true and most of the people in the community believes what they
saying on the comments Example on Facebook most of the bullies are on
Facebook most of them do not of a picture on their profile because people
must see them how the look, they will make you look bad and posts stuff
of you and share your photos to other friends of them.
Cyberbullying-bullies are very dangerous because they will end your life
very quickly and they make you get sick and they will let you go to the
hospital they will threaten you for nothing they will ask you to bring
money to school and take your bread off if you did not bring money with to
school for them, they will humiliate you Infront of everyone that are
standing there they will spread rumours about you that are not true.
2.3) Lack of Awareness and training
Many educators and school staff may not be adequately trained to
recognize and address bullying effectively. There is often a lack of
awareness about the policies themselves among both staff and students.
Cultural Attitudes
Bullying may be normalized in certain cultural contexts, making it difficult
to change perceptions and behaviours. Resistance to change from parents
and communities who may not see bullying as a serious issue.
Resources limitations

4
Limited access to mental health resources for the victims of bullying.
Insufficient funding for training programs, counselling services, and anti-
bullying.
Data Collection and Reporting
Challenges in collecting accurate data on bullying incidents due to
underreporting. Inconsistent reporting mechanisms that may discourage
victims from coming forward.
2.4) Raise public awareness
Educate communities on digital safety
Hold institutions accountable (Example school, social media platforms.)
2.5) Toxic masculinity or peer pressure to “toughen up”
The normalization of online shaming or trolling
Lack of digital etiquette taught in early education

5
Activity 3: DATA GATHERING THROUGH SURVEY AND
ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION COLLECTED

3.1) Critical Analysis:

Trends:
 Most respondents who reported witnessing cyberbullying also
mentioned Facebook and Tik Tok as the main platforms. This
suggests a trend where instant messaging apps are hotspot for
cyberbullying.

Patterns:
 Moderate impact was mentioned by 7 out of 10 participants, making it
the most common effect

 7 out of 10 responsible believe schools safety, showing a pattern of

expecting school intervention.

Key Insights:
Only 7 respondents believe victims get enough support, suggesting that
many students feel Interventions on cyberbullying cases for victims.

Only 9 respondents mentioned parents should be involved, which may

highlight a Engage parents in awareness to help monitor and guide
learner’s online activities.

6
Activity 4: Findings
4.1.1 Lack of digital literacy
Many learners, in communities like hout bay, are not
taught how to use the internet safely. This means
they might not know what cyberbullying looks like
or how to protect themselves from it.
Without basic skill digital skills, some students
might even become bullies themselves without fully understanding the
impact of their actions online.
4.1.2 Social-economic inequalities
In lower- income communities, access to good quality education and
digital resources is limited. This puts some learners at a disadvantage
when it comes to understanding online safety.
On top of that, poverty can create emotional stress at home some
learners might take out their frustrations online bullying others as a
way to feel more in control or gain popularity

4.2 The responsibility to stop cyberbullying does not just fall on

schools- it’s something the whole community should be
involved in:
Raising awareness: Communities can run talks and workshops to help
our young people and parents understand cyberbullying is and how
serious it can be.
Creating safe spaces: Local support groups school counsellors can offer
a place for victims to speak up and get help they need.
Working together Schools should involve themselves in the disciplinary
process when cyberbullying does occur amongst students. If online
behaviour contradicts the school’s code of conduct, they can directly
address cyberbullying on campus by protecting victims and disciplining
bullies. To this end, many schools have set up anonymous bully
reporting forms, sites and hotlines. Technology can help, too. Content
filters often miss incidents of online bullying. Computer word and
phrase monitoring provides actionable evidence to help schools
intervene by helping bullies to change their behaviour and keeping
victims safe. Schools, parents, community leaders, and even police
need to work as a team to stop cyberbullying and hold bullies
accountable.

7
Being good role models: Adults should set a good example by using
social media responsibly and teaching kids to treat others with respect,
both online and offline.
Many times, required school involvement can serve as an effective
solution to end some cyberbullying situations. Schools can educate
students about the dangers of social media. They can also
communicate expectations for appropriate social media usage to
discourage cyberbullying.

Activity 5: Recommendations
5.1 Two ways how communities can stop cyberbullying:
Teach digital skills
What to do: offer free digital literacy classes in schools or community
centers.
Why it matters: when learners and parents understand how to say safe
online, they are less likely to bullied or become bullies themselves.

Set up a safe reporting system

What to do: create an anonymous reporting tool, like a local app or hotline.
Why it matters: this give victims a safe way to speak up, so that action can
be take quickly and fairly, and son that they cannot be scared to speak up let
them feel comfortable around you so that they can speak up.

Activity 6: Reflection
6.1 My thoughts on cyberbullying in my community:
Before starting this research, I honestly did not realize just how common and
harmful cyberbullying is-especially in schools’ line mine, Hout Bay High, I
used to think it only happened in extreme cases or big cities, but l’ve come to
see that it is happening around us more often than we think. Sometimes it is
just a “joke” shared on WhatsApp or a mean comment under a post, but
those things can really affect someone’s mental health and self-esteem,
What struck me the most is how easy it is for someone to hide behind a
screen and hurt others, I’ve seen classmates being targeted for how they
look, talk, or even what they wear, the sad part is, a lot of people do not even
realize that what they are doing is cyberbullying they just follow along
because everyone else is doing it. This research has made me more aware
and more sensitive to how deep the impact can be.

8
Personally, I try to stand up for what is right, I do not believe in keeping quiet
when someone is being hurt or treated unfairly. Whether it is online or in
person, I think we all have a role to play in making our
school and community a safer place. The values in the
Bill of Rights- like dignity, equality, and respect are
important to me, and I try to live by them. That means
not spreading harmful content, being kind in my
comments, and standing up when I see someone else
being bullied.
This experience has really opened my eyes. I now feel
more responsible not just for my own actions, but for
the kind of environment I help create, I believe we need
to talk more openly about cyberbullying and support
each other, because no one should feel unsafe or treat
that way.

Activity 7: Conclusion
From the data gathered, it’s clear that cyberbullying is a serious and common
issue among learners today. Many students shared that they are either
experienced or witnessed some form of online bullying, especially on social
media. This show that cyberbullying is not just a rare problem it affects a lot of
people regularly. The impact on learners is deeply concerning. It does not just
hurt feelings it affects mental health, confidence, and even school performance.
Some learners feel anxious, isolated, or scared to participate in class
While there are support services available, like school counsellors or reporting
tools, not all students know about them or feel comfortable using them. This
means that while the services exist, they are not always effective or accessible.
To really help, schools need to raise awareness and make sure learners know
where to get help and that they will actually be supported they do.
Overall, the findings show how important it is to take cyberbullying seriously and
create safer, more supportive school environments.
