LEARNINGTHE
ENVIRONMENT:
AN OVERVIEW
To have a meaningful and successful accomplishment in this FS episode, be
sure to read through the whole episode before participating and assisting in your FS
2 Resource Teacher’s class. Note all the information you will need and tasks you will
need to do before working on this episode.

Target Your Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this Learning Episode, I must be able to revisit the concept of learning environment in the context of
the current teaching and learning situation.

Clarify Your Task

Overview of the Learning Environment
A learning environment, traditionally called the classroom, is a space in a school that
supports student learning. It is a self-contained area where teacher teaches and children learn. In
the classroom are chairs or tables for students and a front table for the teacher. This is a
traditional face-to-face classroom. Most often the students should face the teacher as the chairs
are arrange that way. But as teaching deliveries changed to enhance learning, modification in the
seating arrangement evolved and more opportunity for the learners to move about for
cooperative learning was addressed.
A conducive learning environment should have the following characteristics:

● Flexibility- There is opportunity to have small groups, movable walls.

● Openness- Learning corners/areas which could be shared.

● Access to resources- Audio-visual materials are ready and open for use.

● Physical classroom- Space is clean and safe.

● Psychological atmosphere- It is friendly and accommodating.

 The classroom climate nurtures the intellectual, physical, social and emotional
development of the students.
Here are some specific strategies for developing the optimal classroom climate. You may
consider these.
1. Learning environment addresses both physical and psychological needs of the students
for security and order, love and belonging, personal power and competence,
freedom and fun.
2. Create a sense of order. For example, teacher should teach students how to

● enter the classroom and immediately engaged in the activity;

● distribute and collect materials;

● find out about missed assignments due to absence and how to make up for them;

● get the teacher’s attention without disrupting the class and

● arranged desks, tables quickly and quietly for various purposes.

3. Greet learners as they enter your face-to-face or on-line classroom.

4. In a healthy and conducive learning environment, everybody belongs and knows each
other.
5. Encourage class building activities like games and team activities.
6. In a conducive learning environment, success whether small or big is recognized and
celebrated.
Both approaches, either the traditional face-to-face or online, lead to positive results but
I different ways, so usually in practice both approaches combined.

 Learning environment can be traditional (F2F), virtual (on-line) or a combination
(Hybrid).

Participate and Assist

What will you do to assist your mentor in setting up a conducive learning environment in
the following conditions:
1. Bulletin Board Display
● Post important announcement for upcoming activities or examinations.

● Post information like infographics that’s summarizing the lessons in a creative

way.
● Display some inspiring quotations, sayings and Bible verses to lighten their minds
and hearts.
● Display outstanding students work in order them to be motivated to do better on
assignments to have their work displayed.
2. Small Group Discussion
● Giving ideas or examples about the lesson discussion and prepare questions to be
ask by the students.
● Demonstrate or execute about the lesson to be tackled.

● Prepare the needed materials or presentation during discussions.

● Prepare an assessment or activities to achieve the objectives of the lesson

discussion.
3. Checking class attendance in a virtual classroom = ( i.e. google meet or zoom)

● Taking screenshot of the list that who participates during Google meeting or zoom
meeting.
● Taking notes of students names in a file document that who attend during virtual
meet and to be forwarded to the resource teacher.

Learning Environment 1:

● What have you notice in the classroom bulletin board? What message or theme does it
convey?
Mostly classroom bulletin board convey information and encourage participation also
keep students informed and can serve a variety of purposes, from inspiring students to
providing information about school community resources.
● What makes it attractive to the learners?
Students attracted to it especially when the bulletin board is eye-catching and displays
student’s outstanding work and can relate to the concepts currently being covered in class.
Additionally displays inspiring quotation, sayings and Bible verses that make students
attracted to it.
● Does it help in the learning process? _Yes_ How? By the information posted or display in
the classroom bulletin student will see the value of it and make learning visible because it
offer opportunities for reflection and help them make connections within and across
subject matter and its contribute and share knowledge to any students.

Learning Environment 2:

● If the teacher is using distance delivery of learning through the modules, where is most
likely the learning space of the students? In this case where students will learn through
their modules I can say that their learning space is within at home.
● Can you describe? Aside from that student is likely learned by the guide of his/her parents
and mostly they learn less and get their attention in any means of distraction.
● How can you as a teacher help to make such environment conducive for learning?
As a teacher I must create a positive and conducive atmosphere within online classroom
by respecting my students and knows them and arrange learning experiences for them to
meet great expectations and accomplish realistic goals even in this new mode of learning.
Making things clear with them from the beginning until daily basis is very important. Like
 earn their cooperation during virtual meets and set their knowledge on the right path. But
the most important is to win student’s heart and minds.

Analyze
The examples above, describe two contrasting situations. The first shows that the learners
are in the same room or space while in the second, the learners maybe in different spaces like
homes, study hubs or in extreme cases parks or under the trees.
As a teacher, in which of the two situations would you prefer to manage for learning?
Choose between learning environment 1 or Learning Environment 2.
Explain your choice: Why? I rather choose learning environment 1 over 2 because in
every corner of the classroom makes learning great and memorable not just inside the classroom
but in every hearts and minds of the students shouldn’t miss out. Face-to-face learning offers
many benefits, obviously not just intellectually but physically and socially. Beyond the actual
learning experience students are also building relationships. Especially when they are in a group
setting, can’t tell those relationships can run in the future.

Reflect
Based on my noticing and analysis, I realized that
a. Having a conducive learning environment may refer to the teacher’s flexibility,
openness and accessible to resources in handling classes to the students.
b. The face to face classes or learning environment 1 is a place where teacher will create
a learning environment that can be learner-centered, knowledge-centered, assessment-
centered, and community-centered and offers more opportunities in school.
c. The online classes or learning environment 2 is a place where teacher and students
meet virtually or we can call it distant learning. In this case they are learning less but at
least away from risk and can learn safe and sound.

What probable problem may result from the two situations of the learning environment?
The unfamiliar learning environment affects students learning motivation, engagement
and learning progress.

REFLECT
What solutions can I think of to solve the problem?
Since in this online learning is unfamiliar some of the students, I think the best way to
solve the problem is that teachers should need to understand to the students the dynamics in an
online setting, how online learning works; interactions, relations, perceptions, role of learners
and instructors. Also teacher should stay connected to them and make them feel that they are
learning where in fact teacher considered teaching when they are facilitating, guiding and
scaffolding the students. In that way, we can finally solve the problem and students will
familiarize its learning environment.

PLAN

How should I do it?

Facilitate virtual meets and make sure that to announce it with your time schedule in
advance so that they can still prepare the said meeting. Always ask them if they are still learning
about the discussion. Do sharing knowledge or wisdom during lesson discussions for them to
feel comfortable and engage to make them feel motivated.

Today's students want a learning environment that isn't as old-fashioned as

traditional classrooms, but is specifically designed to encourage critical thinking.
They like a learning environment that challenges them to learn more by changing
strategies and teaching methods. They want to be a part of a powerful learning
environment that gives them a sense of accomplishment while allowing them to be
adaptable and engaging with their peers. One of the most creative components of
teaching is creating an interesting and enjoyable learning environment for students,
especially in a specific class.
As a future teacher, in order to have conducive learning environment, first I
will train them in a way that they will feel the sense of belongingness. Second, I will
use reward system and praises because appreciation is the key to motivation. Lastly, I
will instill the sense of confidence and responsibility inside the classroom so that
they will believe that they are making a positive contribution to the positive learning
culture. In addition, for them to have a positive learning environment in which
students will grow and be productive so I will do some exciting activities or fun
games in a way that they are still learning while enjoying. Keeping a good learning
environment is one in which students feel engaged and accountable for their own
