Opening Keynote
Brian C. O’Neill, Fire Chief, Louisville Fire Department
The Intersection of Leadership and Technology in Firefighting
8:30 – 9:15 Chief O’Neill will present a keynote highlighting fundamental leadership lessons for successful outcomes.
Kentucky Ballroom “Firefighting is, at its core, a dirty and manual job that, in many ways, is significantly enhanced by
A-E advancements in technology. The built environment where this work occurs is crucial in determining
outcomes. This environment has evolved dramatically over the years and continues to do so at a rapid pace.
No matter how technical the task, no matter the change in the environment, it is still basic and fundamental
leadership that has the most influence on ultimate success or failure.”

General Session
Todd Spalding, Fire Chief, Bardstown Fire Department
9:15 – 9:30 Rickhouse Fires - Can it be Contained?
Kentucky Ballroom History has shown that bourbon rickhouse fires cause losses in the millions. New building designs,
A-E specifically of 55,000 barrel rickhouses, include sprinkler systems. When sprinkler systems are activated in
these structures, it allows earlier notification for fire department response. Will the earlier notification for fire
department response and sprinkler suppression contain the fire enough for extinguishment?

General Session
John LeBlanc, FM
9:30 – 10:00 Hazards and Protection of Distilled Spirits in Wooden Barrels
Kentucky Ballroom The popularity of distilled spirits aged in wooden barrels is driving the building of many warehouses used
A-E to store either palletized or rack (Rickhouses) storage of distilled spirits in wooden barrels. This fire test
program looked at the hazards created by storing high proof alcohol in wooden barrels as well as defined fire
protection designs that can limit the spread of fire in these warehouses.

be presented. The fire risk assessment method considers factors such as hangar classification, operations
and activities conducted within the hangar, and previous loss history. An overview of the fire risk assessment
process will be provided to explain the details and importance of following the approach outlined in NFPA 409,
and how this approach can and has been used on large Group I aircraft hangars. The presentation will also

Sustainable Fire Safety Research Over Three Decades
The advent of extreme weather in recent years has highlighted the effects of climate change, thereby
increasing focus on sustainable fire safety. The question of sustainability in relation to fire safety is, however,
8:15 – 8:50
not new. Since the late 1990s, understanding sustainable fire safety has been investigated using such tools
Kentucky Ballroom
as life-cycle assessment and cost-benefit assessment or life-cycle costing. More recently, efforts to include
A-E
social life-cycle assessment have also been explored. The evolution of this research from exploration of the
environmental impact of fires, and the impact of their detection and tactical suppression will be presented,
together with investigation of cost-benefit approaches and recent efforts to include social assessments in the
broad concept of sustainability. The conclusions are optimistic and look towards a future with sustainable and
fire resilient buildings, sustainable firefighting and the potential to include sustainability considerations in all
future aspects of fire safety, provided there is sufficient willingness and funding.

Pushing the Boundaries – Harnessing Artificial Intelligence in Fire Protection Engineering Practice
Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds immense promise for revolutionizing fire protection engineering, offering the
potential for innovative solutions to enhance safety and mitigate risks in the built and wildland environments.
1:40 – 2:10 AI-powered powered predictive modeling and virtual testing platforms, AI-supported data acquisition and

However, the practical implementation of AI in fire protection engineering practice is not without its
limitations and challenges. This presentation delves into the nuanced opportunities and constraints that shape
the boundaries of AI application in fire protection engineering and summarizes a series of collaborative value
creation exercises with WPI’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and several academic departments.
