SFPE Ethics Series: Introduction to Ethics and Peer Review for Fire Protection Engineers
This seminar covers ethics for fire protection engineers, provides an overview of ethics, and discusses how
engineering practices relate to ethics. It will also explain the ethical obligations of an engineer, the SFPE Code
1:00 – 2:00
of Ethics, and typical ethical challenges faced in the field. There will also be an exploration of the practices and
Kentucky
principles involved in the independent evaluation of engineering work products. Finally, case studies will be

General Session
Todd Spalding, Fire Chief, Bardstown Fire Department
9:15 – 9:30 Rickhouse Fires - Can it be Contained?
Kentucky Ballroom History has shown that bourbon rickhouse fires cause losses in the millions. New building designs,
A-E specifically of 55,000 barrel rickhouses, include sprinkler systems. When sprinkler systems are activated in
these structures, it allows earlier notification for fire department response. Will the earlier notification for fire
department response and sprinkler suppression contain the fire enough for extinguishment?
General Session
John LeBlanc, FM
9:30 – 10:00 Hazards and Protection of Distilled Spirits in Wooden Barrels
Kentucky Ballroom The popularity of distilled spirits aged in wooden barrels is driving the building of many warehouses used
A-E to store either palletized or rack (Rickhouses) storage of distilled spirits in wooden barrels. This fire test
program looked at the hazards created by storing high proof alcohol in wooden barrels as well as defined fire
protection designs that can limit the spread of fire in these warehouses.

Applying the Fire Risk Assessment Process to Existing Group I Aircraft Hangars
This presentation will provide an overview of how research and data analysis helped shape the fire protection

system requirements in NFPA 409 (2022 edition). The process of how and why the changes were incorporated

in NFPA 409 which now allows fire protection decisions to be made based upon a fire risk assessment, will
Salon A-E
be presented. The fire risk assessment method considers factors such as hangar classification, operations
and activities conducted within the hangar, and previous loss history. An overview of the fire risk assessment
process will be provided to explain the details and importance of following the approach outlined in NFPA 409,
and how this approach can and has been used on large Group I aircraft hangars. The presentation will also
include data of fire incidents and automatic suppression system operation in hangars.
