COMPUTING CURRICULUM

INTENT:
To provide a high-quality computing curriculum that equips pupils to use computational
thinking and creativity to change the world whilst remaining creative, engaging and cross-
curricular. The four key areas of coverage ensure skills are both progressive and
comprehensive. Pupils study Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Literacy and
Online Safety as part of our progressive curriculum. Our Computing curriculum is planned in-line
with the content of the National Curriculum.

IMPLEMENTATION:
The computing curriculum is taught in line with the national curriculum based on the Teach
Computing scheme. The content coverage within our curriculum ensures that pupils are
exposed to both scientific knowledge and skills.
Computing begins in EYFS where children begin to learn how to manipulate different types
of digital technology. This is then built on in Year 1 with children learning about the digital
world that we live in and exploring technology further. Throughout a pupil’s time at Sutton
Park Primary, they will revisit this each year through our progressive and spiral curriculum
to ensure that computing knowledge of online safety and our digital world are secure.
Weekly Computing lessons for Years 1-6 focus on the planned curriculum. Across each
academic year, pupils are exposed to Computer Science, Online Safety, Digital Literacy, and
Information Technology. This is taught through a spiral curriculum which ensures that
pupils retrieve and build on their prior knowledge.
Our pupils learn through the use of iPads as well as using other resources to support their
learning. Learning focuses on substantive and disciplinary knowledge. Pupils are exposed
to different types of technology such as data loggers, microbits and beebots during their
time at school. This allows children to have a hands-on experience of the digital world
supporting with the intent of ending their primary school life as confident digital learners.

IMPACT:
Our pupils are equipped with the knowledge to be safe and creative in our ever-changing,
digital world. Pupils are confident in knowing how to code, use algorithms and data after
being exposed to this in our spiral curriculum. Importantly, pupils leave us with the
necessary primary knowledge to build on in KS3.
