📖 Reading: "Technology Then and Now"
By Benson, 81 years old
Hello! My name is Benson. I am 81 years old, and I want to tell you how technology has
changed in my life.
When I was a young man, there were no smartphones, no laptops, and no apps. We didn’t
have Bluetooth or cloud storage. We used a typewriter to write letters, and we sent them
by mail, not by email.
There was no Internet, so we didn’t have Google or any search engine. If we wanted to
learn something, we used a dictionary or went to the library.
At home, we had a rotary phone. It had a circle with numbers, and we had to turn it to call
someone. It made a funny sound! There were no notifications or emojis — we used words
only!
We also had a record player to listen to music, and we played cassette tapes or vinyl
records. No streaming, no playlists. We had to wait for the song to finish — no skipping!
Now everything is so fast. My grandson has a smartwatch and uses wireless earbuds. He
shows me funny videos on his tablet and says, “Grandpa, just click on the link!” But I still
ask, “Where is the mouse?”
Today, people use Instagram and post pictures all day. Back then, we had photo albums.
We didn’t have followers or usernames, and we didn’t worry about cyberbullying or
malware.
We had only one TV at home, and we watched shows together. Now everyone watches on
different screens: phone, laptop, or desktop.
Honestly, I think modern devices are useful and fun, but sometimes I miss the old days.
Things were slower, but maybe simpler. Now I need to remember my password, update
settings, and be careful of viruses!
Still, I try to learn. I have an email account, and I even subscribed to a YouTube channel
about gardening. I’m not a tech expert, but I’m trying!

● Rotary phone – teléfono con disco
