118 Recication Week 12 (Updated)

This document outlines the exercises for Math 118 - Calculus II Recitation 12, focusing on vectors and coordinate geometry in 3-space. It includes problems on vector operations, angles, intersections of lines and planes, and distances from points to lines and planes. The exercises require finding specific vectors, points of intersection, and equations of lines and planes based on given conditions.

Math 118 - Calculus II Recitation 12 - Spring 2025

Chapter 10: Vectors and Coordinate Geometry in 3-Space

1. Let u =< 4, 2, 6 > and v =< −1, 2, 1 >. Find two vectors w and t such that w is parallel to v, t
is perpendicular to v and u = w + t .

2. Let u =< 1, 2, 5 > and v =< 3, 1, −1 >. Find the angle between the vectors and find |u × v|
without finding u × v, , then check your answer by finding u × v .

3. Let u =< 1, 2, −1 > and v =< 3, −1, 4 >. If a vector w makes an angle of π/4 with the positive
x−axis, and u · w = −1, v · w = 4, find the vector w.

4. Find the point of intersection of the plane 3x + 2y + z = 10 and the line passing through the
points P (1, 1, −1) and Q(2, 3, 4) .

5. Consider the line l : x = t + 3, y = 4t + 1, z = 2t ; t ∈ R and the plane P : x − y + 3z = −3 .

a) Find the point of intersection P0 of l and P.

b) Find parametric equations for the line l′ which is perpendicular to l and contained in P.

6. Consider the point P (3, 5, 1) and the line l : x = 2t − 1, y = −t + 2, z = −2t; t ∈ R.

a) Find the equation of the plane passing through P and perpendicular to l.

b) Find the equation of the plane passing through P and containing l.

7. Find a parametric equation of the line l that intersects both of the following lines perpendicularly:

l1 : x = 2t − 1, y = −t + 2, z = 3t + 1; t ∈ R
l2 : x = s + 5, y = 2s + 3, z = −s; s ∈ R

8. Find the distance

a) from Q(2, 3, 1) to the line x + y = 1, y + z = 2 .

b) from Q(1, 2, 0) to the plane 3x − 4y − 5z = 2 .
