ENDNOTE

An endnote is a note or reference placed at the end of a text or major text section.

Endnote or EndNote may also refer to:

Endnote (album), an album by Boston hardcore band The Hope Conspiracy

EndNote, a reference management software package

EndNote is a commercial reference management software package, used to manage

bibliographies and references when writing essays, reports and articles. EndNote was written by
Richard Niles, and ownership changed hands several times since it was launched in 1989 by
Niles & Associates: in 2000 it was acquired by Institute for Scientific Information’s
ResearchSoft Division, part of Thomson Corporation, and in 2016 by Clarivate (then named
Clarivate Analytics). EndNote's main competitors are Mendeley, Zotero and Papers. Article
Galaxy and RightFind are other software programs that can be used for similar purposes. Unlike
Mendeley and Zotero, EndNote is neither free-to-use nor offers a freemium model. Papers is paid
and a free 1-month demo is available. These softwares have both advantages and disadvantages
compared to each other. Features

EndNote groups citations into "libraries" with the file extension *.enl and a corresponding *.data
folder.

There are several ways to add a reference to a library: manually, or by exporting, importing,
copying from another EndNote library, or connecting from EndNote. The program presents the
user with a window containing a dropdown menu from which to select the type of reference they
require (e.g., book, congressional legislation, film, newspaper article, etc.), and fields ranging
from the general (author, title, year) to those specific to the kind of reference (abstract, author,
ISBN, running time, etc.)

Most bibliographic databases allow users to export references into their EndNote libraries. This
enables the user to select multiple citations and saves the user from having to manually enter
citation information and abstracts of papers. Some databases (e.g., PubMed) require the user to
select citations, select a specific format, and save them as .txt files. The user can then import the
citations into the EndNote software. It is also possible to search library catalogs and free
databases, such as PubMed, from within the EndNote software program itself. EndNote is a
reference management software application. Other examples include Zotero, Mendeley,
RefWorks and Papers.

Working with references in Word

EndNote works with Microsoft Word and Open Office Writer to insert citations
into documents. EndNote will format citations and bibliographies into a nominated style. Styles
can include footnotes and numbering.

Setting the Style

 In Word, select the EndNote tab.

 Click the drop down Style menu and select your chosen style from the list or
Select Another Style... (e.g. Author-Date)
Inserting citations

There are various methods to insert citations into documents. The Insert Citation toolbar option
can be used in Word to find a citation or insert a selected citation. You can also directly insert a
citation from EndNote or copy and paste citations from EndNote to Word.

This is one method to insert citations.

 Open your Word document. Click into the text where you would like to place the citation.
 From the EndNote tab click Go to EndNote.
 Highlight the reference(s) that you wish to place in the document. Use the control key and
mouse together to select more than one reference.
 Click on the Insert Citation toolbar button (keyboard shortcut : Alt-2 ).
Using APA 6th as an example, formatted citations appear as (Wu, Chan, &
Ma, 2005). Unformatted citations have curly brackets and exposed record numbers {Wu, 2005
#34}. To format these citations, click Update Citations and Bibliography. Also do this if you
edit the reference in EndNote after entering it in Word to make your edits
appear. To unformat citations, click Convert Citations and Bibliography and select Convert to
Unformatted Citations. This might be done to check that you selected the appropriate references
from your EndNote library.

EndNote will generate a reference list/bibliography in the chosen style at the end of the document.
