MTS212-Business Mathematics & Linear Algebra

Homework-2 Spring Semester, 2025

• Deadline to submit homework is April 21, 2025.

Assignment on Linear Transformations

Instructions: Answer all questions with complete solutions. Justify your
reasoning with appropriate theorems and definitions where applicable.

Question 1:
Define a linear transformation T: R² → R² given by the matrix representation:

A= 3[ 2 −14 ]
Find the image of the vector v = [1, 2]T under this transformation.

Question 2:
Let T: R³ → R³ be a linear transformation represented by the matrix:

[ ]
1 2 0
B = 0 −1 3
2 1 1
Determine whether T is one-to-one and/or onto.

Question 3:
Find the standard matrix representation of the linear transformation T:
R² → R² that first reflects a point across the line y = x and then rotates it
counterclockwise by 90 degrees.

Question 4:
Let T: R² → R² be a linear transformation whose action on the standard basis
vectors is given by:
T(e₁) = [3, 1]T, T(e₂) = [-2, 4]T

Find the matrix representation of T.

Question 5:
Determine whether the following transformation is a linear transformation:
T(x, y) = (x², y+1)T
Justify your answer.

Question 6:
Find the kernel and range of the linear transformation T: R³ → R² defined by
the matrix:
[1
C= 2 1
0 −1
3 ]
