PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION

Introduction
Community service is work done by a person or group of people that benefits others. It is often
done near our area, so our community reaps the benefits of our work. Community service can
help any group of people in need: children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities, English
language learners, and more. It can also help animals, such as those at a shelter, and it can be
used to improve places, such as a local park, historic building, or scenic area as well.
Community service is often organized through a local group, such as a place of worship, school,
or non-profit organization. As Students, we are required to complete community service as
part of a subject requirement. Therefore, we can participate in community service as a way to
help others.

According to NEW DELHI, Jan 18 (Reuters), a government report and data from the health
ministry indicate that the number of children grappling with various forms of undernutrition in
Sri Lanka increased for the first time in at least six years in 2022. More than 43.4% of the
country's children under 5 years of age are suffering from nutrition problems, according to the
report released in October, with 42.9% suffering from some form of undernutrition. In 2021,
8.2% of children below five were found to be wasting away while 7.4% had stunted growth.
"In 2022, percentages of children under 5 years with any form of undernutrition (growth
faltering, underweight, wasting and stunting) has increased compared to 2021," the report says.

According to the above details, I understand our society's main problem currently exists. This
problem is versus day to day in during economic crisis. People have a deficit of knowledge
about malnutrition and how to increase their children’s nutrition during this difficult situation.
Therefore, I decided to do my project on this topic.

Before beginning this project, I discussed with my friends, how we could make a positive

After we looked up how to make an education program and what materials, we will need to
prepare. Finally, we selected the “Sumudu” preschool in Matugama. I contacted the principal
of the nursery Mrs. Chandrika Amarasinghe to get permission. Actually, I highly appreciate her
helping us. I informed her date, time, and time duration.

After my friends and I allocated our responsibilities. We designed a plan for the project. Firstly
we selected the topic for the presentation. We proposed various topics and we all agreed to
select a current topic. Finally, we selected one topic, “How to improve your children’s nutrition
during this economic crisis”.

We plan the project according to this topic. I prepared a PowerPoint assignment in Sinhala. My

Reflective Journal
In reflection on my experience in the project according to the community services subject, I
have gained knowledge about that subject, as well as in what areas social workers tend to feel
most strongly in their practice. On the other hand, that experience was a new way to think and
I am happy to connect the society as far as my capacity. Throughout my project, I had the
opportunity to develop new skills, which are to let me increase my communication with others.
In addition, this program has allowed me to meet people from various ideas and so it can let
me have more opportunities to listen to their life experiences.

I requested my two friends to help with this project. I highly appreciated them, they promised
to me to give their hands for success in my task. I discussed with my friends, how we could
make a positive contribution to society. We brainstormed numerous ideas and ultimately
decided to held a health education program. After we looked up how to make an education
program and what materials, we will need to prepare. Finally, we selected the “Sumudu”
preschool in Matugama. I contacted the principal of the nursery Mrs. Chandrika Amarasinghe
to get permission. Actually, I highly appreciate her helping us. I informed her date, time, and
time duration.

After my friends and I allocated our responsibilities. We designed a plan for the project. Firstly,
we selected the topic for the presentation. We proposed various topics and we all agreed to

7
select a current topic. Finally, we selected one topic, “How to improve your children’s nutrition
during this economic crisis”.

I’m continuing to discuss with my friends and they were supportive and eager to assist and
collaborate with me. Finally, I allocated responsibilities to my members. I really appreciate
again my friends, for understanding our task and support in doing my project without any
argument or anger during this program. In addition, especially need to thank for the principal
and all the teachers in the nursery. We all spent a lot of time happily. When I watched the video
again, I was overjoyed, the video served as one of my memories as well.

This assignment required me to act as a project manager, which required me to plan the entire
project and video production process, which was difficult. At first, I thought it would be a big
challenge for me. And this is the first time I have done my planning and implementation.
Because of this assignment, I have the best opportunity to gain knowledge and experience. It
was difficult at first, but now that we are working together, it is not as difficult as anticipated.
It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the entire process. However, I had some difficulties
during editing the video, which was a new experience and I gained a great knowledge from this
project.

This experience was good and memorable and it provided an excellent opportunity for provide
our friendship. After learning from the project, I’m confident in my ability to plan, implement,
and improve it in the future.

I would like to thank our tutor, who has been helpful in guiding us in our online classes.
Although we have work experience, we were very efficient at work. However, we return the
academics as adult students, we are children, learning new things from our teachers. It has been
my experience with this assignment that I have understood how to start from the planning stage,
implement the plan, coordinate with team members, and what is the significance of
accomplishment we do.

I can contribute to this project as an indoor activity and my friends delivered their duties
successfully. I hope that the project is done successfully as far as our capability and I believe
this project was beneficial for society to send an essential message to society.

Activity 04

How has volunteerism grown or changed through time, and what new trends
are emerging in the field?

Volunteerism is constantly evolving. While the number of individuals and groups volunteering
across the world has steadily increased over the past decade, there has been a concurrent shift
in the way people volunteer, and the way organizations think about volunteering. Volunteers
are increasingly giving their time to the social aspect. More than half of volunteers use digital
platforms to find opportunities. Volunteers are willing to spend more on their own background
checks than organizations think. People are optimistic about the future of volunteerism.

One of the biggest ones is the trend toward micro-volunteering. Young people are highly
motivated to volunteer but they are demanding more flexibility in when, where, and how they
donate their time. Volunteers help improve areas around the world by completing any and every
task, from mending fences and picking up trash to painting a community building or filling a
classroom with necessary supplies. How volunteers make a difference is by recognizing no
task is too small or insignificant. Virtual volunteering will become more popular in 2023
because it complements the work-from-home movement that followed the pandemic.

Types of volunteering

Volunteering to work with animals.

Volunteer for a community project.

Sports volunteering.

Volunteering in hospitals.

Each of the six motivational functions for volunteering is described: values, understanding,
social, career, protective, and enhancement. The research reveals that individuals are most
likely to have multiple motives influencing their level of volunteerism and community
involvement.

Volunteers are working in areas such as education, health, water and sanitation, improving
living conditions, and, in a nutshell, providing people with all kinds of support. Volunteerism
enhances human development, everywhere.

9
Volunteering will help build a solid foundation for the next phase of the career. The skills used,
the tasks completed, and the outcomes you achieve through volunteering will bring closer to
career goals. It will have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
