Introduction to Word Processing
• What is Word Processing Software?
➢ A tool to create, edit, and format documents.
➢ Common uses include writing reports, creating letters, and designing simple
publications.
• Examples of Word Processing Software:
➢ Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS Office.
➢ These programs include features to enhance productivity and document presentation.
Key Features and Functions
1. Insert Button
✓ Used to add various elements to a document such as images, shapes, text boxes, charts,
and symbols.
✓ In inserting an object or shape, cursor should be positioned in a specific location.
✓ If the picture you want to insert is in D drive, it is necessary to browse or locate the
file before you can insert.
✓ For example, to insert a picture, click "Insert," then "Picture," and choose the image file
from your computer.
2. Table
✓ Table is used to arrange your data into a column and row format.
✓ To create a table, click "Insert," then "Table," and specify the number of rows and
columns.
✓ Tables can be customized by adding borders, shading, or merging cells.
3. Effects and Typography
✓ Enhances the appearance of text by applying styles like bold, italic, shadows, or
decorative fonts.
✓ Typography settings can make titles stand out and improve the document’s
readability.
4. Bullets and Numbering
✓ Formats lists for easy reading and organization.
✓ Bulleted lists are useful for unordered items, while numbering is ideal for sequential
steps or rankings.
✓ To apply, highlight the text and choose "Bullets" or "Numbering" from the toolbar.
5. Text Box
✓ Creates a movable box to position text anywhere in the document.
✓ Ideal for creating sidebars, captions, or highlighting specific content.
✓ To insert, click "Insert," then "Text Box," and choose a style or draw a custom box.
A. I-beam pointer
A mouse cursor shaped like a capital “I” that appears when the cursor is positioned over
editable text in a word processing software or text editor. I-beam marks the cursor
position. It indicates that text can be edited, inserted, or selected at the current location.
B. Subscript and superscript
To format H2O correctly, highlight the "2," go to the toolbar, and select the "Subscript"
option (often found under "Font" settings).
C. Select Text for Font Changes
To modify text, click and drag to highlight it, then choose your desired font style, size, or
color.
D. Font Styles
Bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough are font styles that can be used to emphasize or
distinguish words in documents. They can be applied to a whole document, a paragraph,
or a single letter.
E. Deleting Table Rows or Columns
To erase a row in a table, position the cursor in the row you want to delete. Right click
anywhere in the row, then click "Delete Cells" select "Delete entire row" or "Delete entire
column".
F. Table Borders
Click on the table to select it, then use the "Table Design" tab to adjust or remove borders.
