Remember:
The zeros of quadratic functions can be determined by setting up y to 0 and
solving the resulting equation through different algebraic methods (Factoring, Quadratic
Formula or Completing the Square).

What is It?

The graph of a quadratic function is a

parabola. A parabola can cross the x-axis
once, twice, or never. The x-coordinates of
these points of intersection are called x-
intercepts. Let us consider the graph of the
quadratic function 𝑦 = 𝑥2 – 𝑥 – 6. It shows that
the curve crosses the x-axis at 3 and -2. These
are the x-intercepts of the graph of the
function. Similarly, 3 and -2 are the zeros of
the function since these are the values of x
when y equals 0.

7
Since you’ve already know how to get the zeros of the quadratic function, you can go
over the illustrative examples below to better understand the procedure on how to find the
equation of the quadratic function given its zeros, graph and table of values.
A. Finding the Equation of Quadratic Function using Zeros
Study the illustrative examples below.
Example 1:
Find the equation of a quadratic function whose zeros are -1 and -3.
Solution:
Let 𝑥 = −1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = −3
Equate both factors to zero 𝑥 + 1 = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 + 3 = 0
Use Zero Product Property (𝑥 + 1)( 𝑥 + 3) = 0
Solve using FOIL method, 𝑥 2+4𝑥 + 3 = 0
Replace 0 by y 𝒚 = 𝒙2 + 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟑

Example 2:
Find the equation of a quadratic function whose zeros are 2 and -3.
Solution:
Let 𝑥 = 2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = −3
Equate both factors to zero 𝑥−2 = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 + 3 = 0
Use Zero Product Property (𝑥 − 2)( 𝑥 + 3) = 0
Solve using FOIL method, 𝑥 2+ 𝑥 − 6 = 0
Replace 0 by y 𝒚 = 𝒙2 + 𝒙 − 𝟔

B. Finding the Equation of Quadratic Function using Graph

When the vertex and any point on the parabola are clearly seen, the equation of the
quadratic function can easily be determined by using the vertex form of a quadratic
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + 𝑘. Study the illustrative examples below.

Example 3:
Find the equation of a quadratic function
determined from the graph passing through point
(−3, 0)
Solution:
Find vertex of the Vertex
graph (-2, -1)
Use the vertex 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 – ℎ)2 + 𝑘
form of quadratic
function

8
Substitute the point vertex Thus, the equation of the quadratic
given point and the 𝑥 𝑦 ℎ 𝑘 function passing through point (−3, 0)
vertex (−3, 0) (−2, −1) and with vertex (−2, −1) is

𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 – ℎ)2 + 𝑘 𝑦 = (𝑥 + 2)2 −1

0 = 𝑎[−3 – (−2)]2 + (−1) or
Simplify to get a 0 = 𝑎[−3 – (−2)]2 + (−1) 2
𝑦 = 𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 3
0 = 𝑎(−3 + 2)2 −1
0 = 𝑎(−1)2 – 1
0= 𝑎 −1
𝑎=1
Substitute the 𝑎 = 1 ℎ = −2 𝑘 = −1
values of
a, h and k in the 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 – ℎ)2 + 𝑘
vertex form of 𝑦 = 1[𝑥 – (−2)]2 + (−1)
quadratic function. 𝑦 = 1(𝑥 + 2)2 −1
Simplify if possible.

Example 4:
Find the equation of the quadratic function
determined from the graph passing through point
(4, 8).
Solution:
Find vertex of the Vertex
graph (1, -1)
Use the vertex form 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 – ℎ)2 + 𝑘
of quadratic
function
Substitute the given point vertex
point and the vertex 𝑥 𝑦 ℎ 𝑘
(4, 8) (1, −1)
Thus, the equation of the quadratic
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 – ℎ)2 + 𝑘 function passing through point (4, 8)
8 = 𝑎(4 – 1)2 + (−1)
and with vertex (1, −1) is
Simplify to get a 8 = 𝑎(4 – 1)2 + (−1)
8 = 𝑎(3)2 −1 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 −1
8 = 9𝑎 – 1 or
9 = 9𝑎 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 −2𝑥
9 9
𝑎=1
Substitute the 𝑎 = 1 ℎ = 1 𝑘 = −1
values of
a, h and k in the 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 – ℎ)2 + 𝑘
vertex form of 𝑦 = 1(𝑥 − 1)2−1
quadratic function.
Simplify if possible.

9
C. Finding the Equation of Quadratic Function using Table of Values
Study the illustrative examples below.
Example 5:
Determine the equation of the quadratic function x -2 -1 0 1 2
represented by the table of values.
y 1 0 1 4 9
Solution:

Take any three ordered pairs from the table. (−1, 0), (0, 1) and (1, 4)
In this example we select:
Using (−1, 0) 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
we have: 𝒙 = −𝟏 and 𝒚 = 𝟎 0 = 𝑎(−1)2 + 𝑏(−1) + 𝑐
Substitute in the equation then simplify 0 = 𝑎 − 𝑏 + 𝑐 (EQUATION 1)
Using (0, 1) 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
we have: 𝒙 = 𝟎 and 𝒚 = 𝟏 1 = 𝑎(0)2 + 𝑏(0) + 𝑐
Substitute in the equation then simplify 𝟏=𝒄
Using (1, 4) 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
we have: 𝒙 = 𝟏 and 𝒚 = 𝟒 4 = 𝑎(1)2 + 𝑏(1) + 𝑐
Substitute in the equation then simplify 4 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐 (EQUATION 2)
Add Equation 1 and 2 0 = 𝑎−𝑏 + 𝑐
to eliminate b +4 = 𝑎+𝑏+ 𝑐
4 = 2𝑎 + 2𝑐 (EQUATION 3)

Substitute the value of c in equation 3 4 = 2𝑎 + 2𝑐

To solve for a 4 = 2𝑎 + 2(1)
4 = 2𝑎 + 2
4 − 2 = 2𝑎
2 = 2𝑎
2 2
𝟏=𝒂
Substitute the value of a and c in equation 1 0 = 𝑎−𝑏 + 𝑐
To solve for b. 0 = 1−𝑏 + 1
0 = 2−𝑏
−2 = −𝑏
−1 − 1
𝟐= 𝒃
Thus 𝑎 = 1, 𝑏 = 2 and 𝑐 = 1, Substitute these 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
in 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 𝑦 = 1𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏
Thus, the equation of the quadratic function represented by the given table of values is
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1.

Example 6:
Determine the equation of the quadratic function x -2 -1 0 1 2
represented by the table of values.
y 16 10 6 4 4
Solution:
Notice that you cannot find any zeros from the given table of values. In this case, follow the
steps below to solve this example.

10
Take any three ordered pairs from the table. (−1, 10), (1, 4) and (2, 4)
In this example we select:

Using (−1, 10) 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

we have: 𝒙 = −𝟏 and 𝒚 = 𝟏𝟎 10 = 𝑎(−1)2 + 𝑏(−1) + 𝑐
Substitute in the equation then simplify 10 = 𝑎 − 𝑏 + 𝑐 (EQUATION 1)
Using (1, 4) 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
we have: 𝒙 = 𝟏 and 𝒚 = 𝟒 4 = 𝑎(1)2 + 𝑏(1) + 𝑐
Substitute in the equation then simplify 4 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐 (EQUATION 2)
Using (2, 4) 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
we have: 𝒙 = 𝟐 and 𝒚 = 𝟒 4 = 𝑎(2)2 + 𝑏(2) + 𝑐
Substitute in the equation then simplify 4 = 4𝑎 + 2𝑏 + 𝑐 (EQUATION 3)
Add Equation 1 and 2 10 = 𝑎 − 𝑏 + 𝑐
to eliminate b + 4 = 𝑎+𝑏 + 𝑐
14 = 2𝑎 + 2𝑐 (EQUATION 4)

Multiply equation 1 by 2 and 2(10 = 𝑎 − 𝑏 + 𝑐) →𝟐𝟎 = 𝟐𝒂 − 𝟐𝒃 + 𝟐𝒄

add the result in equation 3 20 = 2𝑎 − 2𝑏 + 2𝑐

to eliminate b + 4 = 4𝑎 + 2𝑏 + 𝑐
24 = 6𝑎 + 3𝑐 (EQUATION 5)

Multiply equation 4 by 3 and 3(14 = 2𝑎 + 2𝑐) → 𝟒𝟐 = 𝟔𝒂 + 𝟔𝒄

Subtract the result in equation 5 42 = 6𝑎 + 6𝑐

To solve for c. − 24 = 6𝑎 + 3𝑐
18 = 3𝑐
3 3
𝟔=𝒄
Substitute the value of c in equation 4 14 = 2𝑎 + 2𝑐
To solve for a 14 = 2𝑎 + 2(6)
14 = 2𝑎 + 12
14 − 12 = 2𝑎
2 = 2𝑎
2 2
𝟏=𝒂
Substitute the value of a and c in equation 2 4 = 𝑎+𝑏 + 𝑐
To solve for b. 4 = 1+𝑏 + 6
4 = 𝑏 + 7
4−7= 𝑏
−𝟑 = 𝒃
Thus 𝑎 = 1, 𝑏 = −3 and 𝑐 = 6, Substitute 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
these in 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 𝑦 = 1𝑥 2 + (−3)𝑥 + 6
𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟔

Thus, the equation of the quadratic function represented by the given table of values is
𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 6.

11
D. Solving Problem Involving Quadratic Functions
The illustrative examples below is intended for you to better understand the key ideas
necessary to solve real life problems involving quadratic functions.
Example 7:

From a 96-foot building, an object is thrown straight up into the air then follows a
trajectory. The height S(t) of the ball above the building after seconds is given by the function
S(t) = 80t – 16t2.
a. What is the maximum height will the object reach?
b. How long will it take the object to reach the maximum height?
c. Find the time at which the object is on the ground?

Solution for a and b

Arrange the given in standard form 𝑆(𝑡) = 80𝑡 – 16𝑡2

𝑆(𝑡) = −16𝑡2 + 80𝑡
Transform into vertex form 𝑆(𝑡) = −16𝑡2 + 80𝑡
𝑆(𝑡) = −16(𝑡2− 5𝑡)
25 25
𝑆(𝑡) = −16(𝑡2− 5𝑡 + 4 ) + 16( 4 )
5
𝑆(𝑡) = −16(𝑡 − )2 + 100
2
Get the vertex h k
5
( , 100)
2

The abscissa (h) of the vertex is the time for 5

an object to reach maximum height. 2
The ordinate (k) of the vertex is the 100
maximum height.

a. Thus, the maximum height reached by the object is 100 feet from the top of the
building. This is 196 feet from the ground.
5
b. Thus, the time for an object to reach its maximum height is after 2
or 2.5 seconds.

Solution for c

Let 𝑆(𝑡) = −96

since the height of the building is 96 ft.
Arrange the given in standard form 𝑠(𝑡) = 80𝑡 – 16𝑡2
𝑠(𝑡) = −16𝑡2 + 80𝑡
Solve for t −96 = −16𝑡2 + 80𝑡
16𝑡2− 80𝑡 − 96 = 0
16
𝑡2− 5𝑡 − 6 = 0
(𝑡 − 6)(𝑡 + 1) = 0
𝑡−6=0 𝑡+1=0
𝑡=6 𝑡 = −1
Take the positive value 𝑡=6

c. Thus, it will take 6 seconds before the object hits the ground.

12
Example 8:

A garments store sells about 40 t- shirts per week at a price of 100 pesos each. For
each 10 pesos decrease in price, the sales lady found out that five more t- shirts per week
were sold.
a. What is the maximum sale or revenue?
b. What price produces the maximum revenue?

Solution for a

Let 𝑥 be the number of additional numbers of t-shirt sold.

No. of t- shirt sold 40 + 5𝑥
Price per t- shirt 100 − 10𝑥
Use the formula of revenue 𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑒 = (𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑦)(𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑒)
formula 𝑅(𝑥) = (𝑛𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑡 − 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑟𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑑) (𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑡 − 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑟𝑡)
Substitute then solve 𝑅(𝑥) = (40 + 5𝑥) (100 − 10𝑥)
𝑅(𝑥) = −50𝑥 2 + 100𝑥 + 4000

Transform into vertex form 𝑅(𝑥) = −50(𝑥 2 − 2𝑥) + 4000

𝑅(𝑥) = −50(𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 1) + 4000 + 50(1)
𝑅(𝑥) = −50(𝑥 − 1)2 + 4050

Get the vertex h k

( 1 , 4050)

The ordinate (k) of the vertex is 4050

the maximum revenue

a. Thus, the maximum revenue is 4050 pesos.

Solution for b

Price per t- shirt 100 − 10𝑥

then 𝑃(𝑥) = 100 − 10𝑥

Get the vertex h k
( 1 , 4050)

Substitute the value of h or x 𝑃(𝑥) = 100 − 10𝑥

then simplify 𝑃(𝑥) = 100 − 10 (1)
𝑃(𝑥) = 100 − 10
𝑃(𝑥) = 90

b. Thus, 90 pesos is the price of the t- shirt that produces maximum revenue.
