Description:
For the past few weeks, we have been focusing on bringing the indoors outdoors in the Barnyard
classroom. We love to take our sensory table outdoors, as well as books and indoor table toys to
use on the picnic table. Inside the classroom we just received a new order of books (“How do
Dinosaurs”, nursery rhymes) to place on our shelves and use at group time. With April comes 5
birthdays in our room, giving me the opportunity to write 5 more24 month developmental
assessments. The classroom has stayed fairly stagnant as the staff in the room has had a lot going
on outside of the classroom, so our goal has been stability and meeting the logistical needs of the
classroom.
Analysis:
Holding stability while engaging and supporting the children has been a stressor in the classroom
for the past few weeks, as the general demeanor of staff with personal changes happening outside
of the classroom has affected the children in ways that could have been significantly more
severe, staff has handled the situation to the best of their abilities. During a 2 week time span the
classroom was very high energy and hard to control, this past week being significantly calmer
and smoother running as far as transitions go given staff has centered themselves and learned to
focus in the moment as opposed to what had been happening outside the building. The children
are very engaged in the idea of bringing inside activities outside, specifically the books and
sensory bin – continuously asking for these objects when they are aware that the group is about
to transition outside.
Reflection:
I personally have learned a lot about managing stress in the classroom the past few weeks,
checking out of whatever is happening at home and focusing in the moment for the full benefit to
my children. I saw that teaching myself to focus and relax here gave the children more
opportunities to be comfortable and explore in a curious and intentional way, and they responded
to me much better than they had been when my tone of voice reflected stress. I am looking into
more sensory bin activities to bring outdoors, as well as books that hold springtime themes as I
had noticed how interested the children are in the changing outdoor environment.
