A Jennifer Harris
It wasn’t a hard decision to take over the family business. My parents encouraged me to get involved
in the shop from an early age, and so it’s been a part of my life ever since I can remember. My
mother finds it too difficult now to be in the shop all day, so she’s taken a back seat. She still insists
on checking the books every now and again but I don’t mind. I think she’s just ensuring that I don’t
make any mistakes after four generations of my family running the shop. We’ve continued the
tradition of stocking the shop with all the necessary items you might need for your house: wood,
gardening supplies, nails and anything else you can think of. It will be my tenth anniversary of taking
charge next year, so we’re going to do something special, but I’m not too sure what, yet. Maybe some
discounts on our most popular items or something like that.
B Sarah Underwood
I have a lovely little shop in a beautiful country village, near where I live. I suppose you could call it a
shop, but it also acts as a village meeting point. In one half, we have a couple of tables where
customers can have coffee and home-made cake – not that I make it myself, of course. It’s actually
my father who does the baking. It keeps him active and stops him from interfering in the business.
He seems to think he knows what’s best and we disagree on many things. Other than snacks, I also
sell greeting cards for all occasions as well as basic gifts and glassware, which I’m happy to wrap. I’ve
only been trading for a couple of months, but I’ve been concerned about profit margins, so I’ve been
looking into the possibility of becoming a parcel drop-off point for a delivery company to help make
ends meet.
C Peggy Marchant
I design clothes and sell items that I’ve created. I used to have a market stall in one of the busiest
markets here and thought that I could make it work in my own premises. However, it was probably a
mistake to open such a tiny shop in a large city. It’s not that the stock isn’t selling well – it seems to
be flying off the shelves, and that’s something to be proud of. What I didn’t anticipate was the
extreme costs of running a shop instead of a stall. The bank won’t lend me any more money, so I’ve
had to rely on my sister to keep the business afloat. I’m considering discounting most of my stock so
that I can regain some of the money I’ve put into the business, but to be honest, the value of the
clothing is much higher. It looks like I’ll have to abandon the premises and return to the market later
this year.
D Amanda Jefferies
I actually went into partnership with my brother, but it was all down to the bank that we managed to
have enough funds to realise our dream. We were both heavily into gardening when we were children
– I think we have our grandfather to blame for that! He would be thrilled to know that our little
florist bears his name. We do all our trading online and work out of my garage at home. Luckily my
brother lives next door, so there’s no excuse for him being late, but we don’t tend to disagree on
much anyway. He does more of the personal arrangements, such as anniversaries and birthdays,
whereas I concentrate on corporate clients. We’ve found that if we split the workload that way, we
can achieve much more. Business is booming at the moment as we’ve just taken on yet another big
business client, so we’re going to be extremely busy for the rest of the year.
