Figure 10: Constant Current and Constant Voltage Electrical Characteristics

Figure 11: Effect of Arc Voltage

SRM TRP ENGINEERING COLLEGE
Approved by AICTE, Affiliated to Anna University
SRM Nagar, Irungalur, Tiruchirappalli – 621 105, Tamil Nadu, India

Table:1 Recommended Power source output type by Arc Welding Process

Welding Process GMAW GTAW

Output Type CV CC

Constant Voltage (CV) power is used for all wire-feed welding processes. This
includes GMAW/MIG and FCAW. These are known as semi-automatic processes.
This means that the welder controls everything by hand, except for the feeding of
the wire electrode, which is fed automatically by a wire-feed unit.

Constant Current (CC) is used for welding with SMAW and GTAW/TIG. They are
both manual processes, meaning the welder controls almost everything by hand.
Both processes use their arc length to control the voltage applied to the arc.
Lengthening the arc raises the voltage and shortening the arc lowers it.

2. Connect the welding machine to the electrode holder/torch and workpiece.

3. Study the power source output characteristics (voltage–current curve).
4. Operate under no-load and load conditions to observe variation in output.
5. Record the type of shielding gas used (CO₂/Argon/Argon + Helium mix).

Results:

It was observed that GMAW requires a CV power source for a stable arc length, while
GTAW requires a CC power source for a stable arc current. The characteristics of both
power sources were verified.
