Sneaky Screen Time
Introduction
Are you one of those individuals who spends hours and hours mindlessly scrolling
through your phone? Perhaps yes, or maybe not so much. But in reality 70% of
adults and teenagers are completely glued to their phones and other devices. As I
stand before you today, my only aim is to enlighten you about the dangers and
possible solutions to screen time.
Body Paragraph ( 1st point )
I often wondered what life was like when there were signs of smartphones, when
people had plenty of time to do other things for themselves. Well, now that idea
seems ancient! Doesn’t it? Honestly, we don’t even realize that smartphones are
part of the body now, like an organ! It may appear harmless when holding a small
device in our hand.. But in reality screen- time leads to major problems, such as 1
in 3 individuals experiencing a decrease in their vision due to staring at the screen
for too long. It reduces their quality of vision by 0.5% each year. Shocking right?
2nd point
Did you know that many middle school students and high school students prefer to
have virtual friends rather than fostering in person friendship. A study conducted
by the University of Texas pointed out that about 60% of children and teenagers
prefer to interact online. As a matter of fact, so much so that they prefer chatting
and conversing with fictional friends.. When asked questions they claimed that via
online the people or virtual friends are non-judgemental or hold onto a better
conversation. Think how these children and teenagers are going to function when
they have work with others! How are they going to interact or send a message
across? To top it all off let us not forget how these children are not even interested
in playing games or socializing with another person in real life.
3rd point
Being hooked with the virtual world is not wrong. However, if we are stuck there
for hours and hours, mindlessly scrolling. We practically disconnected from our
reality. We are unaware about our surroundings. Do you think we can find a
balance between reality and the virtual world? Good news! We can! We just
encourage children to read physical books, encourage them to have play times with
their friends. Teenagers could do community service, such volunteering for various
charity organizations. Additionally, they could also learn a new skill or take up
another useful hobby. As for adults, if we find ourselves hooked completely, we
could set a schedule and a proper routine- and perhaps stick to it. That way we
wouldn’t be stuck scrolling for hours!
Conclusion
I urge all the parents, teachers, and anyone present here today to consider the
deadly effects of screen time into account. If we happen to be stuck up all day with
our phones we are most likely going to be facing multiple health problems, we will
also slowly lose our ability to socialize and be part of the society. But fear not as
there are various ways we can make changes for the better. Thank you for your
time today. This is a reminder about what screen time is slowly doing to us.
