Micro Processors and Micro Controllers

This document provides an overview of the course contents for a class on microprocessors and microcontrollers. The course will cover the introduction and evolution of microprocessors, the architecture and instruction sets of the 8085 and 8086 microprocessors, assembly language programming, interfacing with I/O devices, and an introduction to the 8051 and PIC microcontrollers. It also defines microcontrollers as single-chip microcomputers and microprocessors as the processor and control unit parts of microcontrollers. The major architectures for microcomputers are also mentioned.

MICROCOMPUTERS
Cont…
• Major components of the computer - the
processor, the control unit, one or more
memory ICs, one or more I/O ICs, and the
clock
• A single printed circuit board usually connects
the ICs, making a computer called a
microcomputer
• Relatively small and inexpensive computer
that is contained on one or a few chips
Definitions
Microcontroller
A single-chip microcomputer.
A microcontroller (abbreviated MCU or µC) is a computer system on a
chip that does a job. It contains an integrated processor, memory (a
small amount of RAM, program memory, or both), and programmable
input/output peripherals, which are used to interact with things
connected to the chip.
Microprocessor
The processor and control unit part of the single-chip
computer(microcontroller) is called microprocessor.
A microprocessor is also known as a central processing unit in which
numbers of peripherals’ are fabricated on a single chip. It has ALU
(arithmetic and logic unit), a control unit, registers, bus systems, and a
clock to perform computational tasks.
