Summary
• Youth, who are most likely to be students, are the largest consumers
of such devices. This study was conducted to identify if having a low
academic achievement is caused by the too much use of gadgets.
• The findings of the study showed that young people, specifically
Grade 10 students, get easily distracted and entertained by these
popular technological objects.
• They sometimes mismanage their time between studying and using
gadgets because of not having proper usage limitation. This resulted
to the students’ inability to balance time between studying and
gadget use.
• Smartphones and computers are some of the most used
technological gadgets in the present generation that are said
to be mostly consumed by teenagers.
• It can also be a relevant tool for obtaining knowledge
information.
• If usage limitation is not practiced, it can widely affect the
academic performance and achievement of a student.
• Technology itself is not a bad influence on people, but it is up
to the person who uses it to have limitations (Kirsh, 2010).
• Kahari (2013) stated that smartphone is a very relevant and
helpful tools for studying as most of his respondents used
cellphones for study purposes. On the other hand, Coughlan
• Coughlan (2015) emphasized that students, are constantly
getting online distracted while studying; they are busy
checking their social media accounts and playing games.
• Gadgets allow people to communicate easily.
• Gadget usage affects students both negatively and positively.
• Sometimes students use gadgets as their stress reliever after a
tiring school day.
• To further investigate the students’ usage of gadgets, we
conducted a survey to the high school students of St. Mary
Integrated Learning School. The respondents are all the 17
grade 10 students and 10 selected students from grade 7 to
9 of SMILS and six Grade 10 students from other schools.
• The questions are about the students’ time management
between studying and using gadgets, the kind of gadgets
they frequently use and their own opinions about its effects,
their usage limitation and their capability of working on
their homeworks without the help of gadgets.

Discussion
• Based from these collected data, students’
gadget usage is more apparent than
studying.
Conclusion
• There are many factors that can affect the academic
achievement of a student.
• Therefore, gadgets can be very helpful to the students for
educational purposes and widening their knowledge; at the
same time, this can be a huge distraction to the students as it is
very accessible and entertaining to use. Some fail to limit their
usage of gadgets and as a result, they become addicted to these
activities without noticing
