Vector Valued Function

Vector valued functions allow you to express the position of a point in multiple dimensions within a single function. A vector valued function is a function where the domain is a subset of real numbers and the range is a vector. Vector valued functions can be expressed in two or three dimensions using parameters like t to represent the independent variable. Properties of vector valued functions include expressing them using parametric equations in two dimensions as r(t) = f(t)i + g(t)j or in three dimensions as r(t) = f(t)i + g(t)j + h(t)k. Examples show how to sketch and graph different vector valued functions that represent lines, planes, ellipses, and cylinders

Vector Valued Function

Also called vector functions, vector valued functions allow

you to express the position of a point in multiple dimensions
within a single function. These can be expressed in an infinite
number of dimensions but are most often expressed in two or
three. The input into a vector valued function can be a vector
or a scalar. In this atom we are going to introduce the
properties and uses of the vector valued functions.
Properties of Vector Valued Functions

• A vector valued function is a function where the domain is a subset

of the real numbers and the range is a vector.
• In two dimensions
       r(t) = f(t)i + g(t)j
• In three dimensions
     r(t) = f(t)i + g(t)j + h(t)k

• You will notice the strong resemblance to parametric equations.

In fact there is an equivalence between vector valued functions
and parametric equations.
Properties of vector valued
functions
< , , > is another way in expressing Vector Valued Function instead of i, j and k. we routinely use the variable

t to represent independent variable for vector valued function, since in many application t represent time.

Properties of parametric equations for line and space

Formula:
    OR in symmetrical form

Represent 1 line

it means that the line goes through the point and parallel to a non-zero vector
Example 1
•• Find
the parametric equation and vector equation of line through the
point (0,-2,1) and parallel to vector v = 3i + j + 3k. Then determine
where the line intersect the xy-plane.

• Solution

• By writing in term of the parametric equation for line in space, we

will have

• By writing in term of the symmetrical form, we will have

•The
  vector equation is given by r(t) = 3ti + (t - 2)j +
(3t + 1)k.
At xy-plane, which z = 0,

The line intersects the xy-plane at (-1 , , 0).

Example 2
•• Sketch
  and graph the vector valued function r(t) = (2t + 4)i + (t -
2)j
Solution
• By writing in term of the parametric equation for line plane, we
will have

• The line goes through (4, -2) and parallel to vector

v = 2i + j
t=y+2 ………….(3)
Substitute 3 in 1

Then y=-4 when x =0, and x=8 when y= 0, Then new points are (8,4)
