Factorization: Teacher Ken Cayetano

Factorization is expressing an algebraic expression as a product of two expressions. It involves identifying common factors. Common factors include greatest common factors of terms' coefficients and common variables. Examples show factorizing expressions by finding the common factor and grouping the terms accordingly. Factorization is the reverse of expansion.

FACTORIZATION

Teacher Ken Cayetano

What is Factorization?
◦ Factorization is the process of expressing an
algebraic expression as a product of two
algebraic expressions. It is the reverse
expansion.

◦ To factorize algebraic expressions, we will

need to identify the common factors.
What are the common factors?
◦ We need to get the greatest common factors (GCF) in the algebraic
expressions.

◦ In getting the GCF, it is very important that you know your multiplication
table.

EXAMPLE: Get the Factors of 15, 30 and 105

15
30
1, 3, 5, 15, 15
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30
105 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, 21, 35, 105
Simple Factorization
(a) -10x + 25

◦ We need to check first the commonality in the algebraic expression.

Numerical Coefficients are both divisible by five

Greatest Common Factor is 5.

= -10x + 25 CHECKING:

= 5(-2x+5) -10x -10x

= -5(2x-5)
-10x+25 = -5(2x-5)
= 5(-2x+5)

25 25
Simple Factorization
(b) 2x + kx

◦ We need to check first the commonality in the algebraic expression.

Both monomial has the variable “x”

Hence, the common factor is “x”

= 2x + kx CHECKING:

= x(2+k) 2x

2x + kx
= x(2 + k)

kx
Intermediate Factorization
 (b)

◦ We need to check first the commonality in the algebraic expression.

 Both have numerical coefficient of

Both have y variable.

 = CHECKING:
 =

𝟏 𝟏
 = (x - 1)

𝒙𝒚 = 𝒚
𝟒 𝟒
