Smart Card Types and Applications

Smart cards contain an embedded microchip that enables predefined operations or manipulation of information on the card. There are four main types of smart cards: contact cards that require insertion into a reader, contactless cards that communicate via antenna without physical contact, hybrid cards with both contact and contactless capabilities, and dual interface cards with a single chip supporting both interfaces. Smart cards are used for various applications including retail purchases, electronic payment, transit fares, identification, access control, authentication, and healthcare by securely storing and accessing personal information.

Reg No : 09 PG 142
An Electronic card containing an embedded
microchip that enables predefined operations or
the addition, deletion, or manipulation of
Information on the card.
TYPES OF SMART CARDS
 Contact Card

 Contactless (Proximity)Card

 Hybrid Card

 Dual Interface Smart cards

Types Of Smart Card (Contd..)
Contact Card :
A Small card containing a small gold plate on the
face that when inserted in a card reader makes
contact and passes data to and from the
embedded microchip.

Memory Type
 EPROM
 EEPROM
Types Of Smart Card (Contd..)
Contact Less (Proximity) Card
A smart card with an embedded antenna by
means of which data and applications are passed
to and from a card reader unit or other device
without contact between the card and the card
reader
Types Of Smart Card (Contd..)
Hybrid Cards
Contact & Contactless chips embedded into same card

Dual interface Card

A single chip supports both the interfaces
Smart Card reader
A read or write device that serves the primary
purpose of acting as a mediator between the Card
and the host system that stores application data
and processes transactions.
Smart card Operating System
A special system that handles file management
security, input/output (I/O), and command
execution and provide an application
programming interface (API) for a Smart card.
Applications Of Smart Cards
 Retail purchases : Where Speed & Convenience
are important. Eg : Convenience Store, gas Stations
etc.

e – Purse : A smart application that loads money

from a card holders bank account onto the smart
card Chip. This application is standardized for
global interoperability using CEPS(Common
electronic purse specification).
Applications Of Smart Cards(Contd..)
 Transit fares
Eg : SmartTrip Program by Washington Metropolitan
Transit Authority

 E – Identification, Access control &

Authentication
Store personal information, pictures, Biometric
identifiers, digital signatures and private security
keys
Applications Of Smart Cards(Contd..)
 Heath Care
o Storing Vital medical information
o Providing medical practitioners with secure access
to complete medical history.
o Speeding up admissions, payment, Claim &
Insurance Process.
o Enabling patients to access their medical records
over internet
Securing Smart Cards
Encrypted Form of data Storage

Encrypt & Decrypt data that is downloaded or

read from the card

Possibility of hacking is classified as “Class 3”

Attack
