Introduction
TVS Motor Company is the third largest twowheeler manufacturer in India and is among the world's top ten. It is the flagship company of the parent TVS Group employing over 40,000 people with an estimated 15 million customers. It manufactures motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and auto rickshaws. It is India's only two-wheeler company to have won the Deming Prize awarded for hallmark of Japanese Quality control, received in 2002. Its total Revenue is Rs 4,600 crore per annum.

The Legacy of TV Sundaram Iyengar Founder:

TVS Motor traces its origins back to the entrepreneurial spirit of Trichur Venkagaruswamy Sundaram Iyengar who gave up lucrative careers in the Indian Railways and in banking to set up his own business. He began with Madurai's first bus service in 1912 and founded T.V.Sundaram Iyengar and Sons Limited, a company that consolidated its presence in the transportation business with a large fleet of trucks and buses under the name of Southern Roadways Limited.

When he died in 1955 his sons took the company ahead with several forays in the automobile sector, including finance, insurance, manufacture of two-wheelers, tyres and components. The group has managed to run 33 companies that account for a combined turnover of nearly $3 billion USD.

Hosur is a town and a municipality in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. It is a taluk of Krishnagiri district. It is located about 40 kilometres south-east of Bangalore and 38 kilometres from Krishnagiri. Hosur is known for its expanding manufacturing industries and its pleasant climate.

The Hosur Plant contains 3 major plant 1.Mopeds Plant, 2.Motorcycle Plant, 3. 3 Wheeler Plant. Around 3000 employees work at Hosur plant.  The R & D department consists of 300 Engineers in Tvs Motor.  Fuel economy, lower emission, lesser weight to the value Drivers.  The engineers at TVS try to work towards building bikes that are easy to ride, economical to maintain and at the same time are not harmful to the environment.  TVS Motor's strength lies in design and development of new products - the latest launch of 7 products on the same day seen as a first in automotive history.  Alternative fuels are also a big avenue for study. The three wheelers launched recently will be available in LPG and CNG models. Alternative fuels, lower fuel emission techniques are a very important part of R&D at TVS Motor.

Inventory management
Inventory management is primarily about specifying the shape and percentage of stocked goods. It is required at different locations within a facility or within many locations of a supply network to proceed the regular and planned course of production and stock of materials.

 TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) implementation is being

aggressively implemented.
 The inventory other than in-transit have been physically

verified at reasonable intervals during the year by the management.

 The company has maintained proper records of inventory. The

discrepancies between the physical stocks and the book stocks were not material and have been properly dealt with in the books of account.

Quality Control
Quality control is a process by which entities review the quality of all factors involved in production. This approach places an emphasis on three aspects:  Elements such as controls, job management, defined and well managed processes, performance and integrity criteria, and identification of records  Competence, such as knowledge, skills, experience, and qualifications  Soft elements, such as personnel integrity, confidence, organizational culture, motivation, team spirit, and quality relationships.

Quality Control in TVS

 A special task force comprising more than fifty engineers

working on all quality related performance measures leading to improvements in design and processes.
 The company has continued to achieve 100% participation of

employees in TQM. The employees have completed more than 1,468 projects through QC Circles in 2003-04.
 Zero accident has been achieved in both plants.  Productivity has improved by 35%.

Significant achievement has been made in improving internal efficiencies in new product development and design by better understanding of customer needs and product

TVS-M has obtained certification under International Standardization Organization (ISO) 14001 and Occupational Heath and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001 including updating of 2004.
