Input Devices
• Input devices are used to enter data and
instructions into the computer
• Keyboard Device
• Point and Draw Devices
• Touch Screen
• Digitizer
• Speech Recognition Device
• Data Scanning Devices
• Image Scanner
Input Devices
• Keyboard
• Keyboard is a standard input device
• Similar to conventional Type-Writer
• Function Keys
• F1 to F12
• Programmable keys used to perform specific operations
• Numeric Keys
• Used for numeric data
• Alphabetic Keys
• Used for character data
Input Devices
• Keyboard
Input Devices
• Point and Draw Devices
• It helps to rapidly point and select an icon to display on screen
• Trackball
• Just like mouse
• One ball instead of button
• Ball to move cursor
• Neither uses pad nor cover much space
• Joystick
• Pointing device
• For games
• Move the object up, down, left or right in the screen
Input Devices
• Point and Draw Devices
• Mouse
• Pointing device
• User move pointer rapidly on screen with mouse
• Control the movement of cursor position
• Wheel or laser mouse are types
Input Devices
• Point and Draw Devices
• Light Pen
• Pointing device use for making drawing
• Rapidly moves as ordinary pen
• But Work with electricity
• Does not need any alphabetic keys
Input Devices
• Touch Screen
• Capable to touch data directly by using fingers
within the display area
• Simple and easy to use
• Used in mobile phones
Input Devices
• Digitizer
• Convert maps, pictures and drawing into digital
from and stores in computers
• Consist of digitizing tablet and stylus (pen)
• Flat surface table which stylus moves to draws
shapes, picture and maps
Input Devices
• Speech Recognition Device
• Allow user to input speech or voice
• Convert human voice to text
• Helpful for disable persons
• Capable to recognize word with help of software
and convert into text or command
Input Devices
• Uses of Speech Recognition System
• Especially helpful for disable persons, who cannot write
• Help to those persons who feel comfort to speak rather then
to write
• Facilitates user in situation where unable to edit or write
long text
• Help to busy user who cannot have time to write long text
Input Devices
• Data Scanning Devices
• Image Scanner
• Translates printed documents into electric form and stores in
computer
• Important documents can preserve for later use
• Classified into two types
• Flatbed Scanner
• like photocopier having glass sheet
• Also called desktop scanner
• Paper place into glass sheet, light moves and scan the image
• Process repeated to whole sheet scan
• Hand-Held Scanner
• Hand-held scanner work like flatbed scanner but work manually by
user
• Scanner drag slowly on paper to scan the image
• Use in shops to scan prices of product
Input Devices
• Data Scanning Devices
• OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
• Also called optical character reader
• OCR scanner creates image of documents and OCR software convert it into
ASCII text
• Computer interpreted ASCII text as letter, number or character
• OMR (Optical Mark Reader)
• Capable to recognize pre-printed marks by pen Or pencil
• Helpful for marking objective types questions students mark the answer
sheet by filling circles, oval or square
• Printed answer sheet feed into computer by using OMR
Input Devices
• Data Scanning Devices
• BCR (Bar Code Reader)
• It use in shop, glossary stores
• Contain photo electric cell that reads bar code having thick lines
• Analyze the price of item immediately
• MIRC (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition)
• MICR read magnetically encoded characters
• MICR is system that scan printed or hand written characters
• Convert images into marching readable characters
• Electronic card Reader (ECR)
• Scanning e-card / smart card like visa card, credit card etc
• Reads memory card of ATM debit or visa card
• Form of black strip, wiped an ECF machine
Input Devices
• Data Scanning Devices
• Vision Input System
• Latest input device that recognize the vision, image that appears in its
lens
• Especially design for industrial Robots
