Verb Patterns in English
Unit 1
Objective:Understanding the different
verb forms and how they interact
with other elements in a sentence.
What are Verb Patterns?
Verb patterns refer to the structure that
follows a verb in a sentence.
These patterns can involve verb + noun,
verb + infinitive, verb + gerund, or verb +
object + complement.
Verb + Infinitive (to + verb)
● I want to learn.
● She decided to go.
Rules:
Some verbs are followed by an infinitive. These verbs include:
want, hope, decide, expect, plan, etc.
Verb + Object + Infinitive
● He told me to wait.
● I advised her to study.
Rule :
Some verbs are followed by an object and then an infinitive.
These include: advise, allow, ask, tell, encourage, etc.
Verb + Object + Bare Infinitive
● Let him go.
● I made her apologize.
Rules:
Verbs like let, make, and have are followed by an object + bare
infinitive (infinitive without "to").
Verb + Gerund (verb + -ing)
● I enjoy swimming.
● She avoids driving.
Rule :
After some verbs, we use a gerund (-ing form). Verbs like:
enjoy, avoid, suggest, keep, finish are followed by gerunds.
Verb + Gerund / to + infinitive
● Jenny remembers locking the door.
(She remembers that she locked the door.)
● Jenny remembers to lock the door.
(She always remembers to lock the door.)
Rule :
The meaning may change
