Creative Commons Licensing Vs. Traditional Copyright
Traditional Copyright: signified with the Symbol often followed by “all rights reserved”.   Copyright is automatically created when a work, such as a story, photo, song, or artwork is created.   Unauthorized use of copyrighted work by another person can bring a lawsuit by the creator or publisher.
Major downside of traditional copyright: Too restrictive in an age where so much creative work is built on past works. If we cannot build on the past, what do we have to use as stepping stones in future endeavors?
Enter Creative Commons: a non-profit organization dedicated to a new, less restrictive concept of copyright for those who want to share their work. Allows those who build on previous work(by, for example re-mixing a song or using previous artwork in one’s own) to do so without contacting the copyright holder or risking a lawsuit.
WFMZ may wish, for example, to allow use of our graphics or clips of our news stories in some situations. Creative Commons offers further options such as allowing general use or strictly non-commercial use.
After applying for a Creative Commons license at www.creativecommons.org, the license is signified by any of a number of symbols, depending on uses being allowed, such as for public domain or when allowing only non-commercial use.
