What?

• Simplify Accessibility

• Increase built-in accessibility

• Grow Market for Accessible Technologies and
  services

• Facilitate cross-sector collaboration
                 rgardler@opendirective.com @rgardler
Why?

• Internet will no longer optional
  – Education, employment, commerce, civics, health
• Access does not exist for everyone
  – Disability, income, ability
• Access solutions are:
  – too complex
  – hard to find
  – expensive to buy and provide

                   rgardler@opendirective.com @rgardler
How?

• Current situation
  – Individual adaptation
  – Generic accessibility features

• With Cloud4All
  – Automatic-personalisation
  – Personal profiles for specific accessibility features

Editor's Notes

  • #2 While computing devices have highly customisable user interfaces, common configuration requirements such preferred input device, language, font, text size or colour have to be repeated on each deviceused. Cloud4All is an EU project that is working to create an openpublic infrastructure which defines a personal profile to be used toconfigure any device. The profile is stored in the cloud and retrievedby the user whenever they encounter a new device. This will give aconsistent experience on personal and public devices, such as cash andticket machines. It has additional benefits for accessibility forthose with some form of impairment such as a disability or difficultphysical location such as bright lighting. The project is working ondefining the profile ontology and format, creating the cloud basedinfrastructure and protoyping applications that respond toprofile-based configuration settings. Eventually developer tools willbe created to provide easy access.OpenDirective are part of the Cloud4all project consortium and theircontribution includes the development of a prototype application. Thisapplication, Maavis, provides ultra simple access to cloud and localmedia or communications and is designed for use cases that includeolder people and those with dementia or other disabilities. Theapplication is designed to adapt to specific user and platformneeds. This talk introduce the concepts of cloud4all and the impact itwill have on both cloud connected and offline computing devices.

  • #7 Cloud4All aims to develop a complete new paradigm in accessibility, by replacing adaptation of individual products and services for a person with automatic-personalisation of any mainstream product or service, using cloud technologies to activate and augment any natural (built-in) accessibility the product or service has, based on a profile of the user’s needs.
