Learners internal, external? Our learners are only internalWe have learners all over the world
IT ResourcesIT can host and support an LMS(your headache)We need to pay for outside hosting(someone else’s headache)
Top 10 Mistakes When Purchasing an LMS
Mistake # 1Underestimating the politics involved.
Mistake #2Skipping steps to shorten the process or confusing steps.e.g. RFI vs. RFP
Mistake #3Underestimating resources needed to run an LMS (including staff)
Mistake #4Overstating how much you need an LMS and missing opportunity for a starter LMS. (Would a Ford Focus do rather than a Cadillac?)
Mistake #5Confusing content authoring tool selection with LMS selection.
Mistake #6Confusing important features versus nice to have. Not really knowing what you need.
Mistake #7Putting the wrong requirements in your RFP. Paying for too much product that you don’t need.

  • #2 E201 – LMS: What's Out There & How to Decide!10:30 AM – 11:15 AMLori Reed, Learning & Development Coordinator, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Managing Editor of ALA Learning.orgWith so many learning management systems on the market, including the freebies and open-source, where do you start? Reed explains what to expect from an LMS and LCMS (learning content management system), what’s available — from the most popular to the unknown — selection criteria for choosing a system (including factoring in costs for open-source), and how to get buy-in from administration.

  • #12 A Learning Content Management System (LCMS) is a multi-user environment where learning developers can create, store, reuse, manage, and deliver small units of learning content and assets called learning objects. These assets can include media files, assessment items, simulations, text, graphics and other objects which are stored in a central object repository. A robust Learning Content Management System (LCMS) facilitates the organization of learning content and effectively presents it to learners via a Learning Management System (LMS).
