 For students who have never used
LinkedIn:
◦ Introduce you to this useful professional
networking website so that you can gain
a headstart by creating and building your
profile earlier
 For students who already have LinkedIn
accounts:
◦ Highlight some of the features which you may not
have used extensively or to your best advantage
 To allow you to network in real life and to transfer the
real-life networking to LinkedIn networking

 LinkedIn is a professional networking site
 LinkedIn:
◦ connects you to your business/ work contacts
◦ helps you exchange knowledge, ideas, and
opportunities with a broader network of professionals.

 LinkedIn started out in the living room of co-
founder Reid Hoffman in 2002
 Site officially launched on May 5, 2003. At the
end of the first month in operation, LinkedIn had
a total of 4,500 members in the network.
 As of Jun 2011,
members are
signing up at
the rate of

per second

 120 million members in 200 countries (Aug 2011)
 Mgt team from companies like
Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft, TiVo, PayPal and

professional-grade news and information for business
professionals. It has integrated LinkedIn Share functionality to
make it even easier to find and send the right articles to people in
a network.

initiative to helping their student members
showcase a wider variety of accomplishments on
LinkedIn profiles.
 Five new profile sections for students

Section Description
Projects Show you can apply classroom learning to the real-world
and work well with a team. Add compelling research and
experience relevant to your professional goals.
Honors & Awards Did you earn a scholarship or a spot on the Dean’s List?
Tell everyone about it! Honors & Awards provides the
space for objective validation of your accomplishments.
Organizations Show how you contribute outside the classroom by listing
on-campus or off-campus program participation that
showcases your leadership abilities.
Test Scores Earned a terrific GPA or other dynamic test scores worth
bragging about? Talk about it here.
Coursework Is “rigorous coursework” your mantra? Use this space to
select courses which qualify you for that perfect job or
demonstrate academic commitment.
To update your profile, go to your LinkedIn profile page, click Edit mode, then click the blue “Add
sections” bar underneath your profile summary.

 LinkedIn has a “Share” function similar to Facebook
 You can share an article in two ways:
◦ With your network – this will result in a Network Update telling
your network where to read and discuss the article.
◦ With your connections – you can pick and choose who to
send it to and provide a message describing why you
think the content is noteworthy.

 New feature launched in Aug 2011
 A plug-in in the form of a “Apply with Linkedin” button
 Over 1,000 companies have added the plug-in to their
job listing pages.
 Once an applicant clicks on it, their LinkedIn info is sent
to the company in lieu of a resume.
 Applicants are then reminded of professional
connections that might help them get the job.
 Has a “Saved Jobs” feature that helps job seekers keep
track of opportunities they’re being considered for

 How: After facing difficulty in finding candidates
through job boards, Andrew started using
LinkedIn to identify exceptional professionals in

 Who: Uriel Alvarado, Saxo Bank
 Where: Copenhagen, Denmark
 Used LinkedIn to: Grow his professional network and
support his career from post-graduate to current senior role
 How: Uriel has been part of LinkedIn from the beginning;
he has experienced the network as a post-grad student, as
a businessman with personal projects, and now in his role
as head of marketing for Saxo Bank's Latin region. As a
student, he actively participated in discussion forums, and
used the network to look for work and for academics with
an interest in his field of study. As a businessman, LinkedIn
has helped him build up his network internationally, to
include suppliers, partners and sales leads.
