Generic	thoughts	on	“personal	virtual	compu4ng”.
1
What	do	we	need	to	know	about	what’s	possible,	and	what	we	want	to	achieve,	in
order	to	make	sensible	choices	for	providing	services	over	the	next	5-10	years?
2
A	possible	useful	dis4nc4on	–	“where”	is	the	compu4ng	happening?
3
Note	that	this	presenta4on	is	not	interested	in	mul4-user	services,	per	se.	The	focus
is	on	applica4ons	or	services	that	you	can	treat	as	if	they	were	your	own	–	so	you	can
destroy	them,	reinstall	them,	etc.

Virtual	workbenches	offer	mul4ple	integrated	services	configured	to	work	with	each
other.	The	“closed	composi4on”	suggests	that	these	should	be	standalone/self-
contained,	rather	than	accessing	shared	services.	(For	example,	in	a	shared	service
model,	users	might	access	their	own	datasets	stored	on	a	mul4-user	database	server.
In	the	closed	composi4on	model,	the	database	server	would	be	bundled	as	part	of
the	workbench	package	and	only	be	available	within	that	context.)
