Virtual workbenches oﬀer mul4ple integrated services conﬁgured to work with each other. The “closed composi4on” suggests that these should be standalone/self- contained, rather than accessing shared services. (For example, in a shared service model, users might access their own datasets stored on a mul4-user database server. In the closed composi4on model, the database server would be bundled as part of the workbench package and only be available within that context.) 17
