Adele's illness and health history as she's forced to cancel Vegas residency dates
Adele has left fans fuming after she was forced to cancel her Las Vegas residency with just 24 hours notice - and it's not the first time the singer has pulled out of shows
Adele has left fans fuming after cancelling Las Vegas performances, which isn't the first time she's had to let her audience down with a previous history of show cancellations and health problems.
The singer has been struck ill again, meaning she's been forced to cancel her shows and disappointed fans, with many having spent a lot of money to see the singer. Previously the "Someone Like You" star, 35, broke the hearts of ticket-holders when she announced she had to delay all of her Las Vegas concerts in March after being told to rest her voice due to an illness that 'took a toll' on her singing. Adele shared that she initially got sick at the end of her series of shows last year, in early November but couldn't continue even after taking a break.
This week, she took to Instagram to apologize for the "inconvenience", explaining she didn't have "the chance to get back to full health before the shows resumed" on January 19, saying: "I was sick at the end of the last leg and all the way through my break. I hadn't quite gotten the chance to get back to full health before shows resumed and now I'm sick again, and unfortunately it's taken a toll on my voice. And so on Doctors orders I have no choice but to rest thoroughly."
Fans were understandably upset by the news, with many of them having paid a lot for the highly desired tickets. So, as the "Take It Easy On Me" star takes some much-needed rest and recovery, let's take a look back at Adele's history of health issues - and cancelling gigs - over the years.

Throat surgery
In 2011, Adele had to undergo 'vocal cord microsurgery' to remove a harmless lump that made her cancel several shows. The then 23 year old singer had the surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. "Based on the advice of her doctor and voice therapist in the United Kingdom, Adele came to Boston to consult and undergo corrective voice surgery," the hospital said.
The operation was meant to take out a harmless lump and stop her vocal cords from bleeding again. At the time, Adele shared an update on Instagram about her situation. She said: "If I continue to pick up everything before I have properly conquered these problems and nipped them in the bud, I will be totally and utterly f****d. Singing is literally my life, it's my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job."
In 2017, she had to cancel the last two shows of her tour as she told fans: 'I'm devastated'
The star, who was born in Tottenham, left her fans upset when she canceled the final two shows of her tour in 2017. Adele was supposed to perform home-coming concerts in London after her big European tour but after extending the sold out run she pulled out of the original dates at the last minute.
She announced the decision to cancel gigs in a heartfelt Facebook post, revealing that she had hurt her vocal cords again: "On medical advice I simply am unable to perform over the weekend," she wrote. "To say I'm heart broken would be a complete understatement." In the letter posted on Adele's official social media channels, the singer wrote that she was "so desperate" to finish out the run that she'd "even considered miming".
Adele promised fans that they would be given first priority on her next tour, but unlucky ticket-holders are still waiting.
Cancels Vegas residency in 2022 - with 24 hours notice
Adele said the decision to cancel her Las Vegas residency in 2022 was the "worst moment in my career" as she vowed to "nail" the rescheduled shows later that year.
Speaking seven months after the dates were cancelled, the stratospheric songwriter explained why she pulled out of the long-awaited gig - just 24 hours before she was due on stage. "There was just no soul in it," she said in an interview with Elle magazine. "The stage setup wasn't right. It was very disconnected from me and my band, and it lacked intimacy. And maybe I tried too hard to give it those things in such a controlled environment. It was the worst moment in my career by far. I was so excited about those shows. It was devastating."
Adele opened up about the tough time she had after canceling her show, saying, "The first couple of months were really, really hard," but she also felt stronger for it. "But it actually made my self-confidence grow, because it was a very brave thing to do. And I don't think many people would have done what I did."
On New Year's Eve in 2022, Adele told her fans at a concert that she has a health problem that makes it hard for her to walk. While giving away T-shirts during her big concert, Adele shared with her audience that she suffers from severe back pain. The Daily Star reported her saying, "I've got two more, I've just got to get over to the other side of the stage. I have to waddle these days as I have really bad sciatica."
Sciatica is when the sciatic nerve gets annoyed or squished, and it can hurt from your lower back down to your feet. Adele has talked before about having this pain, even telling The Face magazine, "I've been in pain with my back for, like, half of my life, really. It flares up, normally due to stress or from a stupid bit of posture."
