Critics slam Netflix for 'profiting off' Selena y Los Dinos' tragic death as documentary trailer drops

Selena fans are flooding social media with their reactions to Netflix dropping a new documentary about the life, legacy, and music career of the late beloved Latina singer

"I’ll never stop watching stuff about her. She was one of a kind," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter). While another penned, "Man growing up on the South Texas Coast near Corpus being a teenager during those years was INSANE. The bailes, the quinces - it was literal lighting in a bottle you really only get to experience once. A legend."

A third added, "Yes give me the real Selena. Her words from her mouth. No more movies and tv shows of people playing her."

Meanwhile, a fourth shared, "I’m so glad we are getting a new documentary but I still get sad when I see her - it breaks me heart to know she’s gone and I really miss her a lot-she was such a beautiful person inside and out-may that woman rot in jail for what she did to her! We love you Selena-always will!"

Although many were excited to see a project that included real-life Selena and not actors portraying her in biopics, some claimed the documentary was "exploitative."

"This family will never let this woman Rest in Peace. Love her music but how more more do we need to see. Geeze," one criticized.

Another noted, "Love Selena but they don’t let her rest in peace.. just profiting off of her…"

Another added, "Hiding behind the mask of keeping her memory alive while filling up their pockets."

Many fans of Selena were quick to correct those who had the mindset that the Coma La Flor crooner's name was being "milked" for "profit," explaining that there was nothing wrong with her being kept alive through media.

"It’s literally in the Mexican culture to celebrate the lives of the departed. All these 'let her rest' comments are weird," someone defended. "A celebration of her life and music isn’t keeping a spirit from resting. So what if her family makes money from it? Don’t watch it then."

Selena y Los Dinos premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year, and is coming to Netflix on November 17.
