A man has appeared before the District Court in Portlaoise charged in connection with the death of a man at a five-star hotel in Co Laois in a $23k-a-night hotel favored by celebs, it is reported.

The arrested man, not named yet, seemed to be in his 30s and was traveling with his 60-year-old companion, who was eventually found dead at the hotel, Ballyfin Demesne. Gardaí (Irish police) found the US national, who was in his sixties, collapsed on the floor where he was declared dead.

The deceased man was allegedly assaulted, according to authorities. Another US national in his 30s was detained by the Gardaí at the hotel, held at a Garda station in the Eastern Region, and arrested and charged.

The two men had been traveling together. Currently, Gardaí are not searching for any further suspects in the case, which is being characterized as "extremely tragic."

The 30-year-old is due to appear at Portlaoise District Court on Thursday morning.

When emergency personnel arrived at the hotel, they found the victim's body in a restroom in the upscale hotel's recreation area. The gardai informed the victim's family of the fatal occurrence late last night after the victim and the suspect traveled to Ireland from the US the night before.

According to a spokeswoman, the Gardaí are looking into "all the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at a hotel in north Co Laois on Tuesday evening."

They asked the Office of the State Pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau for assistance. An incident room has been set up at the Portlaoise Garda Station, and a Senior Investigating Officer has been assigned to oversee the inquiry.
