It's been announced that Robert Redford has died, aged 89. The news earlier today has prompted tributes to the actor, whose decades-long career included roles in films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).
Robert made his film debut in War Hunt (1962) before becoming a 'leading man' in projects like Barefoot in the Park (1967) and the Candidate (1972). He later ventured into directing, even winning an Oscar for Ordinary People (1980).
The producer, who was a father and grandfather away from his work, had retired from acting in recent years. Following the news of his death this week, we've taken a look back at some highlights from his career.

Just a few years after his film debut, Robert had roles in films like Barefoot in the Park (1967), which also starred Jane Fonda, whom worked with him on several films over the course of his career. Robert had appeared in a Broadway production several years prior.

One of Robert's best known films remains Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). He starred as the Sundance Kid in the Western, with the late Paul Newman playing Butch Cassidy.

Robert's first marriage was to historian Lola Van Wagenen, with whom he had four children. The couple, pictured circa 1970, tied the knot in 1958 and split some years later.

More than 20 years on from his Oscar win, Robert was given an Honorary Award in 2002. It was presented to him by Barbra Streisand, who had starred alongside him in the film The Way We Were (1973).
