Chapter 3
Methodology
This chapter presents the method and procedures that were used in this study, the
researchers gather information by conducting a survey to the students of Balanacan
National High School about the effects of being in a relationship to a student’s academic
performance. The research design, research locale, population and sample, data gathering
instruments, research procedure and the statistical treatment hereby present.
Research Design
In this study, the researchers used qualitative research method. A qualitative
research is multimethod in focus, involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach to its
subject matter which means that qualitative researchers study things in their natural
settings, attempting to make sense of, or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings
people bring to them (Denzin & Lincoln, 1994)
The qualitative research uses grounded theory research design. Grounded theory
is an inductive methodology that provides systematic guidelines for gathering,
synthesizing, analyzing, and conceptualizing qualitative data for the purpose of theory
construction (Charmaz, 2001).
Research Locale
This study was conducted and administered in Balanacan National High School.
Balanacan National High School (BNHS) is a company engaged in Public High School
located in Balanacan, Mogpog, Marinduque.
The figure above is Balanacan National High School with a land area of 5, 274
meters. The school with two buildings – the Junior High and Senior High School
Building, has a total population of 434 where 362 (83.41%) are comprised of junior high
school students and 72 (16.59%) are comprised of the senior high school students.
Population and Sample
The respondents involved in this study are the students of Balanacan National
High School from grade 7 to grade 12.
In this study, the researchers used the stratified purposeful sampling method for
the selection of respondents.
Data Gathering Instruments
The researchers use survey research to gather the beliefs and opinions of the
respondents. A survey is defined as a research method used for collecting data from a
pre-defined group of respondents. Surveys are questionnaires that are administered to
research participants who answer the questions themselves.
The researchers use the coding questionnaire instrument with three pre-coded
questions wherein a number is assigned in advance to each possible answer so that it
would enable a quicker and easier data entry. This instrument serves to answer the
questions and the purpose of this study.
Research Procedure
Before conducting the survey, the researchers created a questionnaire and let their
teacher checks it first before producing copies of the questionnaire and started to gather
data from the respondents.
In gathering the data, the researchers asked permission to the respondents as well
as their subject teacher for their approval to conduct this research study
