TUTORIAL # 5 (Chapter 5)

Q1. A wheel has an initial clockwise angular velocity of 10 rad/s and a constant
angular acceleration of 3 rad/s2. Determine the number of revolutions it must
undergo to acquire a clockwise angular velocity of 15 rad/s. What time is
required?
( Ans. 3.32 rev, t = 1.67 sec )

Q2. The angular velocity of the disk is defined

by ω = (5t2 + 2) rad/s, where t is in
seconds. Determine the magnitudes of the
velocity and acceleration of point A on the
disk when t = 0.5 s.
( Ans. vA = 2.60 m/s, aA = 9.35 m/s2)

Q3. Starting from rest when s = 0, pulley A is

given a constant angular acceleration α = 6
rad/s2. Determine the speed of block B
when it has risen s =6 m. The pulley has an
inner hub D which is fixed to C and turns
with it.
( Ans. v = 1.34 m/s )

Q4. If the angular velocity of the drum is

increased uniformly from 6 rad/s when t =
0 to 12 rad/s when t =5 s, determine the
magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration
of points A and B on the belt when t = 1 s.
At this instant the points are located as
shown.
( Ans. vA = 0.72 m/s, aA =0.12 m/s2)

Q5. If the hoisting gear A has an initial angular

velocity ω4 = 8 rad/s and an angular
deceleration αA = —1.5 rad/s2, determine the
velocity and acceleration of block C in 2 s.
( Ans. vC = 125 mm/s up, aC = 37.5 mm/s2 down)
Q6. A mill in a textile plant uses the belt-and-
pulley arrangement shown to transmit
power. If an electric motor turns pulley A
at 5 rad/s, compute the angular velocities
of pulleys B and C. The hub at D is rigidly
connected to C and turns with it.
( Ans. ωC = 4.50 rad/s, ωB = 3.38 rad/s )

Q7. The right-angle bar rotates about the z-axis

through 0 with an angular acceleration α =
3 rad/s in the direction shown. Determine
the velocity and acceleration of point P
when the angular velocity reaches the
value ω = 2 rad/s.

(Ans. vp = - 0.4i + j m/s , ap = -1.41 - 2.3j

m/s2)

Q8. The crankshaft AB is rotating at 500 rad/s

about a fixed axis passing through A.
Determine the speed of the piston P at the
instant it is in the position shown.
( Ans. 50 m/s )

Q9. The shaper mechanism is designed to give a

slow cutting stroke and a quick return to a
blade attached to the slider at C. Determine
the velocity of the slider block C at the
instant θ = 60°, if link AB is rotating at 4
rad/s.

( Ans. 1.64 m/s )

Q10. If link CD is rotating at ωCD = 5 rad/s,
determine the angular velocity of link AB at
the instant shown.
(Ans. 3.72 rad/s)

Q11. At the instant shown, the truck is travelling

to the right at 8 m/s. If the spool does not
slip at B, determine its angular velocity so
that its mass centre G appears to an observer
on the ground to remain stationary.
( Ans. 5.33 rad/s)

Q12. The pinion gear rolls on the gear racks. If B

is moving to the right at 8 m/s and C is
moving to the left at 4 m/s, determine the
angular velocity of the pinion gear and the
velocity of its centre A.
(Ans. ω = 20 rad/s, vA = 2 m/s to right )

Q13. If the hub gear H and ring gear R have

angular velocities ωH = 5 rad/s and ωR = 20
rad/s, respectively, determine the angular
velocity ωS of the spur gear S and the
angular velocity of its attached arm OA.
( Ans. ωS = 57.5 rad/s, ωAB = 10.6 rad/s )
Q14. The centre 0 of the wheel is mounted on the
sliding block which has an acceleration a0 =
8 m/s2 to the right. At the instant when θ =
45°, ω = 3 rad/s and α = —8 rad/s2. For this
instant determine the magnitudes of the
acceleration of points A and B
