Course Unit 1 Tasks

This document discusses the rise of "e-patients" in nursing informatics. E-patients are engaged in their own healthcare by seeking health information online. They participate in online forums and discussions related to their conditions. While technology empowers patients, it also creates dilemmas for nurses as patients may believe unreliable online information over medical experts. The essay argues collaborative partnerships where clinicians provide medical expertise to patients who share their experiences can enhance patient care and outcomes.

WEEK 1 UNIT TASKS

I. CHOOSE AMONG THE "SIX TIME PERIODS" IN THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF

COMPUTERS IN NURSING THAT IS WORTH RECEIVING THE TITLE THE "GOLDEN
AGE IN NURSING INFORMATICS."

The development of technology gave a massive boost to the advancement of healthcare services
provided by the healthcare environment to increase its efficacy towards maintaining the well-being of
patients. Among the “Six Time Periods,” the “Post 2000 Period” made way to the rapid growth and
development in nursing informatics where mobile computing devices like tablets and smart phones
were invented that served as the Personal digital assistants of the healthcare workers in providing
effective care to the patients. These devices are easier to access due its portability and touch screen
feature where in just one click, several information are showed on the screen. The internet has also
drastically improved that it became more stable than before. Several health websites were made to
provide the public an ease of access to the information about their health that they are looking for. The
Voiceover Internet Protocol was also invented that provides a cheap way of voice communication
towards healthcare organizations. The post 2000 period is what I consider to be the golden age of
nursing because this period is where nursing informatics is at its peak.

II. SUBMIT AN ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE OF AN INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTION

DEDICATED TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF NURSING INFORMATICS

AMERICAN MEDICAL INFORMATICS ASSOCIATION INC.

American Medical Informatics Association operates as a non-profit organization. The Organization
advocates for the development and application of medical informatics. AMIA provides educational
resources, conferences, seminars, membership services, and advocacy.
MISSION
AMIA, the leading professional association for informatics professionals, serves as the voice of the
nation's top biomedical and health informatics professionals and plays an important role in medicine,
health care, and science, encouraging the use of data, information and knowledge to improve both
human health and delivery of healthcare services.

PROGRAM 1
Meetings - there are four core meetings: annual symposium, informatics summit, clinical informatics
conference and informatics educators’ forum:
1. AMIA annual symposium - the largest meeting of the year and provides a forum for various
topics on biomedical and health informatics.
2. Informatics summit - the summit follows the tradition of offering an exciting, innovative and
engaging program around four main areas: translational bioinformatics, clinical research
informatics, implementation informatics and data science.
3. Clinical informatics conference - CIC is where clinicians, data scientists, hit developers and
researchers gather to learn about implementing team-based, integrated healthcare driven by data,
evidence, and best practice.
4. Informatics educators’ forum - IEF provides an opportunity to learn state-of-the-art approaches
and best practices in education, research, and training; and to build, support, and strengthen the
academic informatics community. The conference is designed for faculty and staff who are
committed to their own professional growth and the growth of their program.

PROGRAM 2
Educational programs: there are four core educational programs: 10x10, core content, CIBRC and
AHIC.
1. 10x10 - a program to train health care professionals in applied health and biomedical informatics.
2. CIBRC - AMIA's clinical informatics board review course (CIBRC) provides American board of
medical specialties (ABMS) board-certified physicians with the educational resources to assist
them in becoming certified in the subspecialty of clinical informatics.
3. AHIC - advanced health informatics certification (AHIC) is development of a pathway to
certification for individuals not eligible for the medical subspecialty certification.
4. Core content - core content provides an explicit set of knowledge and skills required for
physicians to practice in the medical subspecialty of clinical informatics. The delineation of

EXPLORATION OF THE E-PATIENT PHENOMENON IN NURSING INFORMATICS

[ CITATION Per12 \l 13321 ]

Nowadays people are more tech savvy to the point where access to technology and internet
became a necessity rather than just for leisure activities. In the field of healthcare, information technology
became a great help to ease the organization of the patient’s medical records as well as providing a more
efficient communication between healthcare personnel and their patients. The internet also vastly
generates information about the medical terms that will provide people, sick or well, a deeper
understanding towards their searched topics.
This journal tackles about the e-patient phenomenon with relation to the nursing informatics. The
e-patient refers to patients who are engaged in their own health care. They are the ones who seek advices
online for their own ailments or they might be the caregiver or relative of a patient. An e-patient has three
variations. The well - who casually uses the internet for general health information, those who face new
medical challenges - who participate in online activities and discussions related to their condition, and
those with chronic, stable illnesses - who use the internet to stay updated with the current trends about
their health condition. E-patient groups have been found to create online forums according to the type of
their illness to share their personal experiences and knowledge with others so that whoever reads it will
have an informed decision of their treatment choice and can manage their symptoms effectively which
can result to positive outcomes.
With the rise of the e-patient phenomenon, healthcare workers face dilemmas due to patients
having the mentality that they are experts about their conditions. They mostly believe what they have read
online which is not always accurate and reliable. A nurse-patient collaboration is viewed as an effective
approach in achieving a positive outcome for the patient. The e-patient, equipped with different
technological tools must seek guidance to medical professionals who will discuss further the medical
terms as well as check the reliability of the gathered information. The newly-developed partnership
between clinicians and patients may open the doors to broaden the concept of wisdom enhanced by their
exchange of knowledge- with the patient sharing his personal experience, thoughts, and understanding
about his own condition, and the clinician sharing his expertise to the patient about the medical condition.
