Smartphones are defined as enhanced mobile phones that perform functions beyond basic calling, such as email and internet access. The first smartphone, called the Simon, was developed by IBM in 1993 and combined phone, pager, calculator and other functions. Common smartphone operating systems include Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry OS, iPhone OS, Android and Linux. Smartphones have LCD touchscreens, memory, processors and other components. Popular smartphone brands include iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson and Samsung. The iPhone was introduced by Apple in 2007 and featured the App Store. Android was released in 2008 as an open-source platform. Smartphones have positive and negative impacts on productivity, communication, education and social interaction.

• Smart Phones are defined to be enhanced mobile phones


that perform functionalities other than the typical phone.
• These enhanced features can be anything from email and
internet to a full keyboard.
• The definition of “smart “ keeps changing as more and more
new functions are introduced to mobile phones.

• Smartphones have been around since 1993, though few people
had one at that time.
• IBM developed the first smartphone known as “Simon”

device.
