1.2 Install for Parallel Processing
FDTD Solutions supports parallel computing on networks of workstations, computer
clusters, multiprocessor workstations and multi-core processors. Parallel execution
means that a single FDTD simulation can be solved using multiple processors/cores, giving
access to a greater total amount of memory and reducing computation time.
FDTD Solutions supports parallel computing on Windows computers using the MPICH2
implementation of the of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) Library. This software is
installed as part of the standard FDTD Solutions installation for both portable and floating
software licenses.

Windows 5
1.2.1 Install on Multiprocessor / Multicore computers
Multi-processor/Multi-core computers contain multiple processors and/or multiple cores per
processor.
The standard installation of FDTD Solutions installs all necessary components to run
parallel FDTD Solutions. You should install FDTD Solutions on your multiprocessor/multi-
core computer as described in the section Install FDTD 2 .
Run a test of parallel FDTD Solutions on Windows
Copy the file C:\Program
Files\Lumerical\FDTD\Examples\
paralleltest.fsp to a known location like your
Desktop or C:\testing.
Open the simulation file.
Open the Parallel Options Window, go to the
Simulation -> Set parallel options menu and set the
number of processors per node to be equal to the
number of processors on your computer. Verify that
the Shell/batch file type should be set to Windows
Multi-processor.
Launch the simulation in parallel by pressing the Run
Parallel button
Note: Username and password
For the first simulation, you will be prompted for your username and password but this will
not happen for subsequent simulations.
Note: Monitoring simulation progress
The parallel version of FDTD Solutions runs in the background (non-graphically). There is
no progress window. Instead, the progress is output to the Command Prompt window.
Note: Log files
The parallel engine creates a log file named filename_p0.log. The information in this
file can be helpful when debugging problems with the parallel engine.
Note: Template files
Once you have configured FDTD Solutions to run parallel simulations successfully, save
this test file (in this case paralleltest.fsp) to a well known location. Please use

6 Windows Installation
this file as a template when creating new FDTD Solutions projects. When starting FDTD
Solutions, please
open this file and then select New->from current project, or
choose New->from existing project and then select this file to be used as a template.
Also, once you have configured the Parallel options properly for your system, you can
save the settings in the default simulation template. For information, see the Online Help -
Installation - Setup and Configuration - Default files page.
For additional help, see the FDTD Parallel Issues 12 page.
Troubleshooting the username and password settings
Save your account username/password
The parallel job manager requires your Windows
username and password in order to start the
additional parallel processes. Rather than having
you type your password each time you run a
parallel job, this information can be encrypted and
stored in the Windows registry. This is normally
done automatically the first time you launch a
simulation but if you encounter difficulties, please
open the program:
Start-> All Programs-> Lumerical-> FDTD
Solutions-> MPICH2-> Set MPICH2 username &
password
Enter your Windows username into the Account
field and your Windows password into the
password field and press the Register button. If
you change your password at a later date, you will
need to repeat this step.
1.2.2 Install on Cluster / Network
To install parallel FDTD Solutions on a computer cluster or network of workstations, follow
these instructions. In both cases, we are installing FDTD Solutions on a number of different
computers connected through some sort of computer network. On a computer cluster, the
computers are generally referred to as compute nodes rather than workstations. Often one
or more computers in a cluster are designated as management nodes and are reserved for
launching jobs and/or storing data files. For the purpose of these instructions, we will use
the terminology of compute nodes and management nodes.
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
Windows 7
The ability to make TCP/IP socket connections between all nodes is a requirement for
running parallel FDTD Solutions jobs. For best performance results, high speed network
hardware is recommended.
Note:
You must have the same Windows account credentials on all the nodes participating in
the parallel job. The same password on all the nodes. MPICH2 does not accept some
passwords with punctuation and other complex characters. It's best to use an alpha-
numeric password.
1. Install FDTD Solutions
Install FDTD Solutions on each node of your cluster (group of workstations) as described in
the Install FDTD 2 section.
2. Save your account username/password
The parallel job manager requires your Windows
username and password in order to start the
additional parallel processes. Rather than having
you type your password each time you run a
parallel job, this information can be encrypted and
stored in the Windows registry. Open the
program:
Start-> All Programs-> Lumerical-> FDTD
Solutions-> MPICH2-> Set MPICH2 username &
password
Enter your Windows username into the Account
field and your Windows password in the password
field and press the Register button. If you change
your password at a later date, you will need to
repeat this step. This step only needs to be
performed on the node where you intend to launch
the jobs from (generally the management node).
3. Configure your list of hosts
FDTD solutions needs to know the names (or IP
addresses) of the nodes that will participate in the
parallel job. These are stored in a machines file.
The machines file is a simple text file where each
line contains the name or IP address of a node.
The default location for the machines file is C:
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
8 Windows Installation
\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\mpich2
\machines.txt. For this example, we will
assume our cluster has 4 nodes named node1,
node2, node3 and node 4.
Edit the machines file with a text editor such as notepad. This step only needs to be
performed on the node where you intend to launch the jobs from (generally the
management node).
Note: Determining the Name / IP address of your computer
1. Open a command prompt. This program can be found at Start->All Programs-
>Accessories->Command Prompt
2. Run the command “ipconfig /all”
3. There will be a line containing the text "Host Name”. This will be the network name of
this computer. There will also be a line containing the text "IP Address". This will be
the IP address.
4. Setup a network directory
Only the first node used in a parallel FDTD job needs to be able to read the simulation
project (fsp) file. However, it is generally a good idea to use a network drive that can be
read by all computers. This allows you to move between computer and easily open the
different files. The most convenient way to accomplish this is to create a network share on
one of the nodes (typically the management node). The network share should be
accessible to all nodes in the cluster using Windows UNC path names in the form:
\\server\public\temp
Where server is the name of the PC that owns the shared folder, share is the name
that you have entered for the file share and folder is the name of the folder within the file
share that contains your fsp file. You should save your fsp files in a folder or sub-folder of
your shared folder prior to running them in parallel.
If you already have a network folder that can be accessed by all the nodes, you may use
this location to store your fsp files for parallel simulation. Otherwise, you can create a file
share on your management node by using the Windows Explorer to navigate to a folder,
then right click on the folder and select the "sharing and security" or "sharing" option
(depending on the version of Windows you are using). For more information on creating a
shared folder, see your Windows operating system documentation.
5. Run a test of parallel FDTD Solutions on Windows
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
Windows 9
Copy the file C:\Program
Files\Lumerical\FDTD\Examples\
paralleltest.fsp to a known location like your
Desktop or C:\testing.
Open the simulation file.
Open the Parallel Options Window, go to the
Simulation -> Set parallel options menu and set the
Shell/batch file type to Windows Cluster. Set the
number of nodes and the number of processors per
node apprpriately.
Launch the simulation in parallel by pressing the Run
Parallel button
Note: Monitoring simulation progress
The parallel version of FDTD Solutions runs in the background (non-graphically). There is
no progress window. Instead, the progress is output to the Command Prompt window.
Note: Log files
The parallel engine creates a log file named filename_p0.log. The information in this
file can be helpful when debugging problems with the parallel engine.
Note: Template files
Once you have configured FDTD Solutions to run parallel simulations successfully, save
this test file (in this case paralleltest.fsp) to a well known location. Please use
this file as a template when creating new FDTD Solutions projects.

1.3.1 Installer errors
This page provides a number of suggestions to try when the FDTD Solutions installer fails
to run properly.
Ensure you are using an Administrator account
You must be logged in to your PC with an account that has Administrator privileges. If you
don't have Admin privileges, please ask your system administrator to install the software.
Disable MPICH2
The FDTD Solutions installer automatically installs the MPICH2 framework for parallel
simulations. This can cause some installation problems. In particular, MPICH2 requires
that Service Pack 3 be installed on Win XP machines. If you don't have SP3 installed, you
must disable MPICH2 to install FDTD.
To disable MPICH2, run the FDTD Solutions Installer. One step in the Installer GUI will ask
if MPICH2 should be installed. Unselect this option, then complete the installation
process.
Note: Without MPICH2, parallel simulations will not be possible. It is possible to install a
different version of MPICH2 separately that does support Windows XP 32 SP2. Please ask
support@lumerical.com for details.
Disable your virus scanner
Disable your virus scanner then try to install FDTD again.
Install FDTD on another computer
Try installing FDTD on another computer in your network. If it installs properly, then we will
know that the problem is specific to the one computer. If the installer fails again, the
problem is more likely related to some type of network wide setting.
Getting more help
If you still can't get the installer to complete, contact support@lumerical.com for additional
help. Please include as much information as possible, including:
The version of FDTD you are trying to install (i.e. FDTD 7.0.0, x64 for Windows)

1.3.2 Crashes and graphics problems
If FDTD Solutions crashes at startup or unexpectedly while using the CAD editor, your
graphics card driver is probably to blame. Try the following steps to fix the problem:
Update graphics card drivers.
The majority of graphics problems are related to the graphics card driver. Installing the
latest drivers from the graphics card vendors website will fix most problems.
If you still have problems after installing the latest drivers, see the additional suggestions
below. Always remember to restart FDTD Solutions after making changes to the graphics
card settings.
Disable hardware acceleration
If you have the most recent graphics card drivers and are still experiencing problems, try
disabling the hardware acceleration of your video card.
In Windows XP, go to the Display section of the Control Panel. Go to the Settings Tab and
click the Advanced button. Go to the Troubleshoot tab and lower the hardware
acceleration by sliding the tab halfway to the left. If the problem still persists, try sliding
the tab all the way to the left.
Problems with selection and zoom box
If there are problems with the select and zoom boxes, try setting the environment variable
GL_OPTIONS to NO_GL_XOR. For more information, see the FAQ - Environment variables
12 section.
NVIDIA graphic cards
Disabling the vertical synchronization can fix some graphics problems. The vertical
synchronization setting can be accessed through the NVIDIA control panel.
I've tried your suggestions, but there are still problems.
Please contact Lumerical support at support@lumerical.com for assistance.. Please
include as much information as possible, including:

1.3.4 FDTD parallel issues
How do I configure my firewall? 12
What is the smpd service that is installed with FDTD Solutions? 13
How do I troubleshoot running simulations under parallel FDTD Solutions? 13
How do I configure my firewall?
Parallel FDTD Solutions requires network (TCP/IP) connections to be made between the
computers participating in the parallel simulation. If your computer(s) is(are) running a
firewall application, it will have to be configured to allow the FDTD Solutions applications to
access the network resources. Because the same software technology is used to support
parallel processing on multi-processor/multi-core computers, this class of computer also
needs to have the firewall configured for the FDTD Solutions applications.
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
Windows 13
The FDTD Solutions installer will configure the Windows firewall settings automatically.
Windows firewall is included with Windows XP service pack level 2 and higher and
Windows 2003 service pack level 1 and higher as well as Windows Vista. If you are using a
3rd party firewall application then you will have to manually configure your firewall. Most 3rd
party firewall applications will ask permission for an application to access the internet the
first time it is run. Other firewall applications require that applications are added to an
exceptions list through a configuration utility. In the case of manual firewall configuration,
the following table lists the applications that need to be added to the firewall exceptions list
and granted access to the network.
Application name Default install directory Type of
connection
FDTD-par.exe C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin Inbound/outbound
smpd.exe C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\mpich2 Inbound/outbound
\smpd.exe
mpiexec.exe C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\mpich2 Inbound/outbound
\mpiexec.exe
fdtd-solutions.exe C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin Outbound
fdtd.exe C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin Outbound
What is the smpd service that is installed with FDTD Solutions?
The smpd service is part of the MPICH2 package and is installed with FDTD Solutions. This
application runs in the background on your computer and listens for requests to start
parallel FDTD Solutions jobs from other computers. The FDTD Solutions installer will
configure this service to start automatically when the computer is started. If you install
FDTD Solutions without administrator access, the smpd application will be installed on
your hard drive, but it can not be configured as a service that starts automatically. If the
smpd application is not running parallel FDTD Solutions jobs can not be run.
Since the smpd application accesses the network, your firewall must be configured to allow
the smpd application to accept inbound connections.
How do I troubleshoot running simulations under parallel FDTD
Solutions?
To troubleshoot the installation of parallel FDTD Solutions, try the following steps:
If you have a firewall on your system temporarily turn it of.
Prepare an FDTD simulation that you can run on a single computer and save it to a
network directory as test.fsp
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
14 Windows Installation
Open a command prompt from START->ALL PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES->
COMMAND PROMPT
Change directory to the file containing your fsp file test.fsp
Run the simulation as 2 processes on a single machine by using the command "C:
\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\mpich2\mpiexec" -exitcodes -
localonly 2 "C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin\FDTD-par" -
logall test.fsp.
Check that two log files were created, called test_p0.log and test_p1.log. The
last line in these files should say "Simulation completed successfully". If these log files
do not exist see the FAQs on firewall settings and the smpd service. If the log files are
empty or indicate that your license is not valid, test the license file, try running single
processor FDTD from the command prompt with the command "C:\Program
Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin\FDTD" test.fsp. If there is a problem finding your
license, you will get an error message.
Select two machines to try running a true parallel FDTD simulation (for example, host1
and host2) and try pinging them with the following command: ping host1 or ping
host2. You should see a reply from the hosts. Note that you can try using the host
name or the IP address.
Try running with the following command "C:\Program
Files\Lumerical\FDTD\mpich2\mpiexec" -exitcodes -iproot -hosts 2
host1 host2 "C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin\FDTD-par" -
logall fullpath\test.fsp. Note that:
A.fullpath is the full path to your network drive, for example \\host1\shareddocs\
B.FDTD Solutions must be installed on both host1 and host2 in the directory C:
\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD
Once your machines file is configured correctly (see Install on Cluster 6 ), you should be
able to run the simulation with "C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\mpich2
\mpiexec" -np 2 "C:\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\bin\FDTD-par"
fullpath\test.fsp.
When you have found the command that works best for your system, you can create a
batch file with this configuration by opening your CAD layout editor (START->ALL
PROGRAMS->LUMERICAL->FDTD->FDTD SOLUTIONS). Choose SET PARALLEL
OPTIONS from the SIMULATE menu. You’ll see this window
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
Windows 15
Choose CUSTOM for the "Shell/batch file type" and place your working commands in the
SHELL OR BATCH FILE window. Save this *.fsp file to a well known location. Please use
this file as a template when creating new FDTD Solutions projects. When starting FDTD
Solutions, please
open this file and then select New->from current project, or
choose New->from existing project and then select this file to be used as a template.
The CUSTOM batch file you created will be loaded and you can run parallel FDTD Solutions
in your desired way. You can place any "wildcards" in the custom file that you want: for
example
<filename> will be translated into your exact fsp filename each time you save
<dir_exec> will be translated into the desired executable directory, typically "C:
\Program Files\Lumerical\FDTD\
<dir_fsp> will be translated into the desired directory of the executable, for example, "\
\host1\shareddocs\"
Look at the Windows multi-processors example to see how these wildcards are used.
1.3.5 Trial license validation
Lumerical’s trial software must connect to the internet to validate a trial license. This
connection is made using the standard web (http) protocol and no personal information is
transmitted in this request. In some situations, computers with strict firewall rules or
computers that connect to the internet through a proxy server will fail to connect. The
following instructions should help you resolve most of these issues. If you continue to have
difficulty with the license validation process, please contact support@lumerical.com for
additional assistance.
Connecting to the internet through a proxy server
© 2003 - 2010 Lumerical Solutions, Inc
16 Windows Installation
Many corporate and institutional networks are setup so that individual computers access
the internet through a proxy server. In these situations, the individual computers can not
connect to the internet directly but instead send their requests through a designated proxy
server. If your network requires the use of a proxy server and you are having trouble with the
license validation, you may need to manually configure your proxy server settings in FDTD
Solutions. The following window will appear if FDTD Solutions can't connect to the internet:
Enter the proxy server IP address and Port
number, then click OK.
If your proxy server requests a username and
password, a second window will appear.
Enter you username and password and click
OK.
Note: Proxy sever settings in Windows.
Under MS Windows operating systems, proxy server settings are detected and
configured using the settings in the "Internet Options" control panel. These settings are
the same ones that are used by Internet Explorer. Normally if Internet Explorer is
configured correctly then Lumerical's software will find the appropriate settings. If you are
having trouble with the automatic proxy server settings, check your proxy server settings
in the Tools - Internet Options - Connection - LAN settings menu if Internet Explorer.
Connecting to the internet through a firewall
Many personal computers use firewall software to improve security. Firewalls control which
applications may access the internet and can be configured using different rules depending
on the level of security required. Most firewalls are configured to allow all outgoing
connections to the internet but to strictly control incoming connections. The trial license
validation process only requires an outgoing connection to the internet, so normally no
firewall configuration is required. If you are using very strict firewall settings you may have
to add exceptions for to your firewall settings to allow FDTD Solutions to make outgoing
connections. The best way to test whether your firewall is interfering with the license
validation process is to temporarily disable it. If disabling the firewall allows the license
validation process to complete, then you should re-enable the firewall and add exceptions
for FDTD Solutions. You will have to allow fdtd-solutions.exe, fdtd.exe, and fdtd-par.exe to
