Turning Moment Diagram and Governor
1. The flywheel of an engine has a radius gyration of 1 m and mass of 200 kg.
The starting torque of the engine is 1000 Nm, and may be assumed constant.
Determine :
(i). the angular acceleration of the flywheel
(ii). Kinetic energy of the flywheel after 10 seconds from the start.
(Neglect effect of arms and hub).
[Ans: = 5 rad/sec2 K.E = 250 kJ]
2. A pressing machine is operated by an electric motor which delivers 3 kW. The
flywheel of the pressing machine has a speed of 280 rpm at the
commencement of the operation and the moment of inertia of the flywheel is
55 kgm2. Each pressing requires 5.2 kJ of energy and takes 0.75 second. Find:
(i) the number of pressings that can be made in 1 hour.
(ii) The reduction in speed of the flywheel after the pressing is over.
Neglect friction losses.
[Ans: n = 2077, N1- N2 = 18.05 rpm]
3. A machine is driven by a constant torque electric motor with a speed of 210
rpm. The torque of the machine is shown in Figure 1. Find the torque of the
motor and also the power.
If the system is fitted with a flywheel of mass 210 kg and radius of gyration of
the flywheel is 0.75 m, calculate the percentage of fluctuation of speed.
[Ans: Tm = 417 Nm, P = 9.2 kW, = 3.1 %]

4. Figure 2 shows changes in torque with time in one cycle operation for a
puncher machine. The machine is driven by an electric motor which produces a
constant torque and rotates at a mean speed of 250 rpm. If the moment inertia
of the flywheel is 50 kgm2, find the power of the motor and percentage of
fluctuation of speed.
[Ans: P = 2.32 kW, = 8.9 %]

5. Figure 3 shows a Porter governor for which the speed range can be varied by
means of the auxiliary spring S. The spring force is transmitted to the sleeve by
the arm AB which is pivoted at A. The two balls each of mass 0.36 kg are
supported by four links, C1, C2, C3 and C4, each 90 mm in length. The sleeve
carries a mass of 0.9 kg. The sleeve begins to rise when the balls revolve at a
speed of 200 rev/min in a circle of 75 mm radius. The speed of the governor is
not to exceed 220 rev/min when the sleeve has risen 10 mm from its original
position.Determine
(a) the necessary stiffness of the spring, S
(b) the tension in the link C1 when the sleeve begin to rise

6. A governor of the Proell type is shown diagrammatically, with certain
dimensions, in Figure 4. The central load acting on the sleeve has a mass of 25
kg and the two rotating masses each have a mass of 3.2 kg. When the
governor sleeve is in mid-position, the arm AB of the cranked lever ABC is
vertical and the radius of the path of rotation of the masses is 175 mm.
If the governor speed is to be 160 rev/min when in mid-position, find:
a. The length of the arm AB, and
b. The tension in the link BD.
Neglect friction.
