CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Occasionally a new technology appears which promises to change our

lives for the better. It either improves our performance by working more simply

and at a faster rate, or it creates possibilities and options that did not previously

exist. Computational machines are one such technology. Computers tirelessly

perform calculations far beyond human capabilities. They also create different

possibilities for interacting with the world by applying these calculations to

information processing, and thus, form a new arena for social interaction.

Through computers, information and communication technologies have become

a major vehicle for change in the information age (Castells, 2000).

Technologies like the Internet continue the social evolution of

communications and information that began with speech, writing and printing (for

an analysis of these influences see Ong, 1982). The Internet and the World-wide

web (Web) represent the latest “disruptive” technologies (Christensen, 1997) by

creating new opportunities for identity formation that disturb values that have

been the mainstay of communication for a long period of time. In the process, the

computer is generating new ethical challenges in many areas of modern life. All

the norms of a pre-computer society, including those associated with education,

are now open to question (Kizza, 1998).

Technology is continually changing and empirical studies of the

characteristics of technology do not provide answers that remain meaningful for

very long. Technology can help with these projects and

skills. Students can create things such as web sites, blogs, and multimedia

presentations as part of their homework and project. They can use the web for

research and as a resource. They can connect with students at other schools

and do collaborative work with them. Technology has the ability to enhance

relationships between teachers and students. When teachers effectively

integrate technology into subject areas, teachers grow into roles of adviser,

content expert, and coach. Technology helps make teaching and learning more

meaningful and fun.

We conduct this study to solve problems, to add to existing

knowledge, to develop or confirm theories or models about using technologies in

homework making of Accountancy and Business Management students at

Plaridel Intergrated National High School.

Background of the Study

Technology is one of the most valuable tools that we have available at our

finger tips every day. You can do virtually anything with your smart phone, tablet,

or computer. Over the years, it has revolutionized our world. Technology has

created amazing tools and resources, putting useful information at their

fingertips.
The advantage of education technology is evolving quicker than the world

that we live in, registering its presence in almost all aspects of human life.

Education is one of the prime areas where a significant impact of technology can

easily be noticed. Filling gaps by helping overcome the insurmountable

challenges that education in developing countries face, the ever-advancing

technology has helped achieve remarkable things in a short span of time.

Mentioned below are some of the major advantages that the inclusion of

technology in the education system has brought along – Improved access to

resources education system Educational systems, mostly in developing

countries, have faced a massive deficit of access to resources, which has been

well compensated for, through the use of technology in education.

Unlocking educational boundaries is probably one of the biggest

advantages that the use of technology in education has brought along. By

introducing online or virtual learning to the educational processes, it has helped

education grow past geographical boundaries.

With advanced technological applications, students and teachers can

reach each other more easily than before. The increasing involvement of smart

tools and technology in education has also decreased the stress that most

parents face with regards to their child’s education.

The Philippines should not be left behind when it comes to applying

education technology. The ethical and responsible use of computers, tablets, cell

phones and other devices can greatly enhance the learning capability of

students, for it has been shown through studies that children (and adults for that
matter) can better grasp and understand their lessons in a more relaxed

environment, without the prying (and sometimes mocking) eyes of classmates or

teachers. Emerging technologies can be powerful tools in education.

Teachers can disseminate their lessons and assignments with ease, and

students can work on their lessons at home. Teachers can send lectures through

email and, schools can issue communications the same way.

Theoretical Framework

Studies show that technologically rich learning environments provide for

better development of life skills. These skills include organizational, problem

solving, inquiry, and collaboration skills. The learning environment is improved by

providing more cooperative learning and reduced competition. It also has shown

that technology integration increases the chance of interaction within the learning

environment.

Situated Cognition is a learning theory which supports the idea that

learning occurs only when situated within a specific context.  It believes that

learning takes place in a learning community or community of practice, where the

learners take an active role in the learning community.  It involves a process of

interaction between the learners within the community, the tools available within

the specific situation and the physical world.  It is within this active participation,

this interaction (whether with tools, artifacts or other people), where knowledge is

located.  Therefore knowing evolves as the learners participate and interact

within the new situation.

Cognition is linked to the action the learners in the community take,

whether it is physical in nature or a reflective process within the learners

themselves (Myers & Wilson, 2000). Wilson and Meyers put it this way, “the

development of knowledge and competence, like the development of language,

involves continued knowledge-using activity in authentic situations” (Myers &

Wilson, 2000,).

Situated Cognition also takes into account the culture of the community at

large and “treats culture as a powerful mediator of learning and practices, both

for students and teachers (Myers & Wilson, 2000).” Basically, a program based

on this theory will not be successful if the larger communities, outside the

learning environment, culture is not considered, as it can define what may be

possible within the learning environment (Myers & Wilson, 2000).  The main

points to remember about situated cognition for the purpose of this paper are that

“knowing, learning and cognition are social constructions, expressed in actions of

people interacting within communities” (Myers & Wilson, 2000).

In Distributed Cognition the student is afforded more power. In other

words it is a student cantered approach to learning where the learners participate

in a systematically designed learning environment that supports interaction

among its participants.  Distributed cognition describes a construction of

knowledge that takes place in a natural environment which is synergistically

connected to the cognitive actions taken by the participants in the learning

environment. (Bell & Winn, 2000) This theory promotes learning in a community

of learners or a system where interaction takes place. It is through this interaction

where cognition occurs. Distributed Cognition requires sharing of cognitive

activity among the parts and participants of this system, which can be other

people or artifacts such as devices, technologies or media. These participants

distribute their cognition among other learners and physical or digital artifacts by

externally representing their knowledge.  The role of technology within this theory

is an invaluable part of the system in which the learners are interacting. This

interaction can either help to distribute their knowledge, off-load certain amounts

of cognitive work making the cognitive load less and or help to scaffold new

capabilities (Bell & Winn, 2000). In this theory technology (artifacts and or tools)

can be used to help extend human capabilities. An example of this might be the

use of manipulative in the early development of basic addition skills. In this

theory technology (artifacts and or tools) can be used to help extend human

capabilities. An example of this might be the use of manipulative in the early

development of basic addition skills.

All of the above emerging theories share many of the same aspects. All

these theories explain the concept of advantages of technology. Technology

integration has also been shown to help create more authentic learning

environments where the students are more motivated to attend, have a greater

chance of communication and collaboration and have more opportunities to use

higher order thinking and problem solving skills connected to real world

applications. This has led some to believe that new theories in learning needed

to be developed that would help to support the creation of such learning

environments.
Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 shows the advantages of using technology in classroom. It has

different effects of every student. However, the result of survey from ABM

students will be the basis of our research.

Statement of the Problem

Reasons of using technology in homework making

Students can study and make their homework anywhere where they have

access to a computer or mobile phones and internet connection. Without the

internet, you need to go to the library and walk around to look for books but now

you can just go home and get into the internet and type in your search team.

phone_technology_for_learning_activities)
Students are engaging with technology constantly outside of the

classroom. Kids like to be interactive, and learning through technology has now

become a part of their lifestyle. According to tech&learning.

The students of this generation are considered technological learners.

They learn best being more interactive, and technology is what helps them do

that. Children often struggle to stay on task or interested, and with resources to

help the teacher, they can better stay focused and learn faster.

Empower students to control their own learning

In the world dominated by technology, a good education depend on digital

know how in addition to problem solving, clear communication and organizational

skills. Students are learning how to work independently and use technology to

explore new concept, where teaching students take change of their own learning

and engage in healthy debate. (Editor’s note: Google for Education Premier

Partners are working with schools to host the ExploreEDU event series).

Students take challenges, persist, make mistake and do things good

students do. This make directly teaching student about control they have over

their learning and achievements as an important aspect. In contrast, students

with a learning mindset are more inclined to see the result as temporary.

According to Adora Svitak, as much of a reader and education technology

enthusiast as I am, I believe this most powerful resource is something else

entirely. It's something collective -- the diverse imaginations, observations,

opinions, hopes and dreams of students. By empowering students, you can

engage them further in learning; provide a more democratic learning experience,

empowering students is about a realization.

The Help of technology

Teachers can use technology to find sources and attend virtual

professional development seminars and conferences. They can also create

personal learning networks (PNL). Technology can help. Parents can go to a

class website and see what their child is working on, they can contact teachers

via email and websites, and they can even check their child’s attendance and

grades through online systems. Technology can be used to improve teaching

and learning and help our students, students can access websites, online

tutorials, and more to assist them. (https://webanywhere.co.uk>2016/02)

Technology encourages individual learning. It provides great opportunities

for making learning more effective for everyone with different needs. They can

also improve knowledge retention students who are engaged and interested in

things they are studying, are expected to have better knowledge retention.

Benefits of technology

Technology can help to encourage active participant in the classroom

which is also is a very important factor for increased knowledge retention. It

improves engagement; technology provides different opportunities to make

learning more fun and enjoyable in terms of teaching same things in new ways.
For instance, delivering teaching through gasification, talking students on virtual

fieldtrips and using other online learning resources.

The technology movement has been implemented in post-secondary

education as well as other professional jobs. For new teachers, technology is

considered a necessity for the learning environment.

Studies show that homework improves student achievement in terms of

improved grades, test results, and the likelihood to attend college.

Research published in the High School Journal indicates that students who spent

between 31 and 90 minutes each day on homework "scored about 40 points

higher on the SAT-Mathematics subtest than their peers, who reported spending

no time on homework each day, on average. On both standardized tests and

grades, students in classes that were assigned homework outperformed 69% of

students who did not have homework. A majority of studies on homework's

impact - 64% in one meta-study and 72% in another - showed that take home

assignments were effective at improving academic achievement.

Research by the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) concluded that

increased homework led to better GPAs and higher probability of college

attendance for high school boys. In fact, boys who attended college did more

than three hours of additional homework per week in high school.

their strengths and talents, and help them work together more effectively with

parents, mentors, and each other. The goal is to get students working together to

help them learn, study and do research. Working together collaboratively this

way is an important 21st century skill that we should be fostering in our

classrooms.

Students can invite each other to study sessions where they can work in a

collaborative whiteboard type space, chat with fellow students, post successes,

and send friends thank you cards for helping out. Students can learn about their

unique learning style and will receive tips for working more effectively

Reasons of using technology in homework making

Classrooms online is not as big a challenge as some imagine, according

to a study by the education provider, Pearson, “92% of students under 16 now

use a home laptop or desktop computer to complete their school work” (Stopher,

2010). Even though there are students who do not have access to a computer or

the internet at home, schools in the United States have become highly

technological: every regular classroom in my building in Rittman School District in

Ohio, for example, has at least three student computers available, not to mention

the computer labs and web-book carts. In addition to the availability of

computers, students in school today are seen as a ‘technological’ generation,

and some educators have pointed out that we need to use a method with which

these students are familiar.

According to Ragan Whiteside, technology can enhance the learning of

the students, especially in making their home works. By studying online, you

chose your own learning environment that works best for your homework making.

Technology can give students great sources, new opportunities for learning,

ways to collaborate and create and save money.

According to David Andrade, improving education is a huge issue (and

always has been). Test scores, our perceived performance against other

countries, and other factors have pushed education to the forefront of national

politics, right behind healthcare reform. Technology can be used to improve

teaching and learning and help our students be successful.

Empower students to control their own learning

Opportunities for all students to build and develop and promote their

innovate ideas. Schools may suppress their aspiration their passion and intense

interest, a good way to look at helping students to control of their own education.

Empower students is to make their work matter in real world. At times

empowering students can feel like a risky move, may end up with more engaged

interest and empowered students a result. It also empowers students to control

their own learning According to Bena Kallick and Allison Zmuda.

Tony Wagner and Ted Dintersmith (2015) that suggested, "The purpose of

education is to engage students with their passions and growing sense of

purpose, teach them critical skills needed for career and citizenship, and inspire

them to do their very best to make their world better."

This can help students recognize where they may be too hard or

themselves and it may help you recognize attitudes in yourself that impact your

grade. This purpose, however, often remains unfulfilled. Students from even the

most privileged schools may suppress their aspirations their passions and

intense interests because their deepest desires are held captive to the

practicality of what others call success.

According to Rachelle Poth “know you’re a big believer in technology and

use it extensively in your classes.” Technology truly expands the learning

opportunities in the classroom, for students it means new, authentic ways to

amplify their learning, to connect with the content in a more meaningful way and
to choose how to apply their learning. And for us, educators, technology and the

digital tools made it easier to empower students in their learning. By creating,

students can focus on their own needs and develop the ability to self-assess

while also enhancing their technology skills in the process.

The help of technology

Technology can give teachers and students great resources, new

opportunities for learning, ways to collaborate and create, and save money.

Technology is a very powerful tool for education. Inquiry based projects are

another way to get students to think rather than memorize. Technology can help

with these projects and skills.

Homework is seen by many educators as being a necessary extension of

the classroom. Whether it is used for extended practice, reinforcement of old

material or as an introduction to new topics, it is traditionally believed that

homework has a very real (and important) place in classrooms and in student

learning (Hong, Wan, & Peng, 2011).

Benefits of technology

Students can learn useful life skills through technology. By using

technology in the classroom, both teachers and students can develop skills

essential for the 21st century. It encourages collaboration by getting involved in

different projects by sharing documents on their virtual learning environment.

Technology in (and out) of the classroom has the potential to be used as a

motivating tool. According to Doorn, Janssen and O’brien (2010) from a

preliminary study on the subject of motivation within an online classroom setting,

students “overwhelmingly report that online homework is beneficial in

understanding material and preparing for exams” and go on to say that students

“felt that it is at least as easy to use as traditional homework, and most

recommend it”. The work by Richards- Babb, Drelick, Henry and Robertson-

Honecker (2011) reinforces this sentiment; they point out that 80.2% of the

students in their study group view online homework favourably .

Similarly, Hakverdi-Can and Sonmez (2012) show that comparable

internet-based teaching techniques, such as the use of WebQuests, can be

valuable for both the student and the teachers in terms of promoting inquiry, as

schools throughout the country catch up with technology while building up the

resources within their buildings, and with students receptive to technological

outlets during their school day.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the research methodology explains how the proposed

study will be fulfilled. It is appropriate to define the methods of data collection and

illustrate the composition and operation of the questionnaire survey in this

chapter.

According to Brink (1999), the aim of data analysis is to reduce and

synthesis information to make sense out of it and to allow inference about a

population, while the aim of interpretation is to combine the results of data

analysis with value statements, criteria, and standards in order to produce

conclusions, judgements and recommendations. The methods used to process

the results, together with the methods used to analyse and interpret results, are

discussed in this chapter. Initially the research design is described. This is

followed by stating the population, the sample and sampling procedures. The
chapter also outlines the methods of data collection and the plan for data

analysis. Lastly issues related to the reliability, validity and bias are discussed.

Research Design

According to Cormack (1996), the research design represents the major

methodological thrust of the study, being the distinctive and specific approach,

which is best suited to answer the research questions. The research questions,

the aim and the objectives of the study thus influence the selection of the

research design (Brink, 1999).

The purpose of the research design, as stated by Burns and Grove

(2001), is to achieve greater control of the study and to improve the validity of the

study by examining the research problem. In deciding which research design to

use, the researcher has to consider a number of factors. These include the focus

of the research (orientation or action), the unit of analysis (the person or object of

data collection) and the time dimension (Bless & Higson-Smith, 1995).

The researchers used Descriptive Method of Research to answer

the questions and describe data and characteristics of the subject being studied.

It is used in many fields of investigation due to its applicability to solve different

kinds of problem. It involves the description, recording, analysis and

interpretation.

The descriptive survey method will be used in this study. Descriptive

because its main concern is to get the holistic view of the characteristics of

subjects exposed blended learning. Both qualitative and quantitative research

shall be observed as it will elicit opinions and numerical data from the

respondents through survey questionnaire.

Research Locale

This study was conducted at Plaridel Integrated National High School, this

place was selected for knowing the efficiency of the said study among Grade 11

Accountancy and Business Management strand.

Subjects/Units of Analysis

In this descriptive study 1 class (section) of Plaridel Integrated National

High School will be selected to participate in the process. Students receiving

questionnaires are Grade 11-Accountancy and Business Management Strand

that will be our respondents.

There are 41 students in Accountancy and Business Management class.

In this descriptive study, 20 respondents of ABM students will be randomly

selected to participate in the process.

Sampling Procedure

Convenience sampling will be utilized in this study. ABM students will be

used as subjects and respondents. The 20 students will be selected to answer

the given questionnaires. There are 5 questions in each questionnaire that

should be answered by the ABM students.

Research Instrument/Instrumentation

A set of questionnaire will be distributed to the respondent. A

questionnaire will be used in gathering data. The questionnaire consisted of 5

items that determined the advantages of technology in homework making. The

questionnaire will be consisting of a question that is related to the study. The

functionality of the study will be determined through the questionnaires.

Data Gathering Procedures

The first step is the researchers will identify issues and/or opportunities for

collecting data and to decide what next steps to take. We’ll make decisions about

who will be surveyed, how data will be collected, the sources of data that will be

used, and the duration of the data collection project, among other questions. The

group of interest will be the focus of the study, and the data collection methods

used will refer to this group, or the persons within it, depending on the goals of

the project. When thinking about who the data will be collected about, it is

important to consider who you think will be most affected by.

Second, the researcher will

made a letter for the approval to conduct the study at Plaridel Integrated National

High School. We have to be approved before we conduct our study. It is true that

writing such a project is easy if you have the right sources but one of the most
problematic aspects in writing a dissertation paper is the aspect of data gathering

procedure. Usually, it involves knowledge about using it.

Third, we do data mining, this procedure is simple. We can easily find many

resource materials where data and numerical figures are already tallied and

presented. Usually, we can find data among research institutions and academic

canters. Data mining is simply using an already published set of data. We also do

interviewing, one benefit that we can get from this process is that we can actually

gather raw and reliable data direct from your subjects. Although it is time

consuming, you can still have very credible result from this data gathering

procedure.

Lastly is surveying, it actually involves gathering responses from subjects

through a written medium. We will be distributing paper questionnaires for your

subjects to answer. In designing a survey, it is important to consider the specific

characteristics of the respondents, to make sure that the questions are relevant,

clear, accessible and easy to understand. Some practical considerations to keep

in mind are whether the respondents can read, have languages or cultural

barriers, have disabilities, and can be easily reached. We will then tally the

results and use the data for your research. After collecting all data, the result

would hopefully be the basis for knowing the results of using technology.

Analytical Framework

A central tenet of most learning theories is that learning occur inside a

person. Even social constructivist views, which hold that learning is a socially
enacted process, promotes the principality of the individual (and his/her physical

presence- i.e. brain- based) in learning. These theories donot address learning

that occurs outside of the people (i.e. learning that is stored and manipulated by

technology). They also fail to describe how learning happens within

organizations.

Learning theories are connected with the actual process of learning, not

with the value of what is being learned. In a networked world, the very manner of

in formation that we acquire is worth exploring. The need to evaluate the

worthiness of learning something is a meta- skill that is applied before learning

itself begins. When knowledge is abundant, the rapid evaluation of knowledge is

important. The ability to synthesize and recognize connections and patterns is a

valuable skill.
CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the data

gathered. All the responses were coded, categorized, and interpreted accordingly.
