Low voltage distribution ‘systems are often controlled end protected
‘vy combinations of the following elements:~
a) Air circuit Breaker (acB's)
>) Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCOB's)
c) Fuse Switches
Difficulties are sometimes encoutered in achieving full dicorimination
vetween the three types of unit mentioned above, due to differences in
‘their protective characteristics, Air circuit breakers are usually
controlled by relays or direct-acting series overload devices, both
having an inverse time-overcurrent characteristic, Moulded case
circuit breakers gonorally havo a therm] characteristic combined with
an inatantaneous characteristic which usually produce a bigh knee~point
on the overall time-cuzrent curve, Fuses have an extyenely inverse
time characteristic given generally ty the relation It = ke
‘The solution is to replace the inverse time overcurrent protection on the
incoming air circuit breaker vith a solid state relay which has & dual
inverse tine overcurrent characteristic, This means that the low set
and high set overcurrent characteristics are both inverse, but the high
eet time multiplier is a factor of 10, smaller than the low aet
characteristic. The earth fault characteristic is also inverse time
overcurrent. The low set and high set characteriotics can be set
together vith the earth fault element to suit the system, Tustead of
having the limitation of conventional protection the M-Pact breaker
fitted with the solid state relay can be adjusted to eny one of a number
of curves as shown in figure 1.

GENERAL SPECIFICATION
PZ 66 or CTZ 76 relays can be fitted in any convenient position
near to the circuit breaker trip mechanism,
‘The 01% 66 is a three pole overcurrent relays the CTZ 76 hes in
addition an earth feult element, The protection is operated vholly
vy current transfornors, which provide adequate power for the
electronic cirovitry.
When the relay operates, a thyristor triggers the discharge of a
capacitor charged to 30 volts D.C, ‘This output is used to operate
a sensitive actuator to trip the circuit breaker,
Figure 5 shows the choice of overcurrent settings and times based on
the main ¢.7. primary current ratings being the same ac the circuit
preaker current ratings. For-other C.?. ratings the settings should
be maltiplied by the ratio of the chosen C.T. primary current to

APPLICATION
‘The overcurrent characteristic can be selected to cuit a variety of
syaten requirements by a conbination of inverse time low set and
high set characteristic. he overall characteristic is shown in
figure 6. The characteristics are controlled by two adjustable
switches,
Control 1 varies the low set pick-up current I, in 4 steps from
0.55 to 1,0 times the rated current $ of the cizeuit
breaker. For values see figure 55
Control 2 varies tho high set pickeup current ti 4 stepa from
2 to 8 times the setting current I, of the relay,
ARTE FAULT
The earth feult inverse tine characteristic is given in figure 7.
The characteristic is controlled by one adjustable awitch,
Control 3 varies the earth fault pick-up ourrent I, ( FH ) in 4 eteps
from 0,15 to 0.6 times tho rated earth fiult current I, CE).
