Electrical Engineering Project
Assignment
Project Title: Design and Implementation of a Smart Grid Monitoring System
Course: Electrical Engineering Senior Project
Due Date: April 30, 2025
Project Overview:
In this assignment, you will take on the challenge of designing and implementing a
Smart Grid Monitoring System for a local power distribution network. The aim is to
create a comprehensive solution that monitors the grid's electrical parameters, detects
faults, and allows for remote control and management. This project will require your
expertise in power electronics, control systems, and data analysis.
Project Objectives:
1. System Design: Develop a detailed system design that includes hardware
components, communication protocols, and data analysis methods.
2. Hardware Implementation: Build and install sensors and measurement devices
on selected grid points to monitor voltage, current, power factor, and other
critical electrical parameters.
3. Data Acquisition and Analysis: Develop software for real-time data acquisition,
storage, and analysis of grid parameters. Implement algorithms to detect and
locate faults.
4. Remote Control and Management: Create a user interface that allows remote
control of grid elements and management of faults.
5. Testing and Validation: Rigorously test the system's functionality, accuracy, and
reliability under various operating conditions.
Project Deliverables:
1. System Design: Detailed schematics and diagrams of the monitoring system.
2. Hardware Implementation: Installed sensors and measurement devices on the
power distribution network.
3. Software Codebase: Source code for data acquisition, analysis, and remote
control software.
4. Testing and Validation: Documentation of testing procedures and results.
5. User Manual: User-friendly documentation explaining system operation, data
interpretation, and fault management.
Project Timeline:
• January 15 - February 28: System Design and Component Procurement
• March 1 - April 15: Hardware Implementation and Sensor Installation
• April 16 - April 30: Software Development, Testing, and User Manual
Preparation
Submission Guidelines:
• Submit the project report, codebase, and user manual electronically by the due
date.
Grading Criteria:
Your project will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
1. System Design: The completeness and appropriateness of the system design.
2. Hardware Implementation: The quality and accuracy of installed sensors and
measurement devices.
3. Software Development: The functionality, efficiency, and usability of data
acquisition, analysis, and control software.
4. Testing and Validation: The thoroughness of system testing and validation.
5. User Manual: The clarity and comprehensiveness of the user documentation.
Important Note: Plagiarism or failure to meet submission guidelines will result in a
reduced grade.
Additional Resources:
• Access to sensors, measurement devices, and grid access can be arranged
through the university's electrical engineering lab.
• Consult with your instructor, Dr. Michael Lee, for technical guidance and support
throughout the project.
Good luck with your assignment, and remember that this project provides an
opportunity to apply your electrical engineering skills to enhance the efficiency and
reliability of the power distribution network.
