This paper consists of EIGHT questions in ; A, B and C.
Answer TWO questions from section A, ONE question from section B and TWO questions
From section C in the answer booklet provided
All questions carry equal marks.
Maximum marks for each part of a question are as indicated.
Candidates should answer the questions in English.

This paper consists of 6 printed pages.

Candidates should check the question paper to ascertain that all the

Answer THREE questions from this section.

1. (a) What is an electrical final circuit. (2 marks)


(b) You are supposed to carry out a polarity test on live circuits for lighting.
Outline the procedure you would follow in carrying out the test. (5 marks)
(c) Outline three characteristics of each of each of the following. (6 marks)
i. Conductor
ii. Insulator

(d) Using a well labelled diagram, explain ring circuit in an electrical installation

and outline two of its advantages over the radial circuit. (7 marks)

2. (a) Outline 5 roles of the Kenya Power and Lighting company (5 marks)
(b) Draw a well labelled diagram of a Hydro – electric power station. (8 marks)
(c) Draw the following electrical power distribution system (6 marks)
i. A.C two wire system
ii. D.C two wire system

(d) State one disadvantage of the ring circuit in an electrical installation (1 mark)

3. (a) Outline the procedure you would follow when carrying out polarity test

a dead lighting circuit (5 marks)

(b) Using a well labelled diagram, describe a radial circuit in an electrical

Installation. Also, state one advantage and one disadvantage of a

radial circuit. (10 marks)

(c) Outline 5 advantages of circuit breakers over fuses. (5 marks)

4. (a) With the aid of well labelled diagram(s) describe two different ways of

achieving spur Connection. (8 marks)

(b) In each method described in 4 (a) above, state the IEE regulation regarding

the spur connection. (2 marks)


(c) Explain three reasons for carrying out polarity test in an electrical

installation (6 marks)

(d) Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) is the leading electric

power generating company in East Africa. Outline 4 of its roles (4 marks)

5. (a) For each of the following stages of a typical transmission and distribution
