Symptom
Performance issues in your Application Server ABAP are noticed.
In order to help your processor to speed up the analyses and provide a solution, the knowledge of what
information the engineer will need it is needed.
This KBA is intended to help you to collect all the information that the processors need to start an AS ABAP
performance issue troubleshooting.
Environment
• SAP NetWeaver release independent.
Reproducing the Issue
1. You are accessing the system;
2. Notice that the entire system, or a specific transaction, is not working properly/ taking longer than the
expected to load.
Resolution
Please provide the requested steps.
○ What do a processor needs to initiate an investigation?
Here’s some basic needs to start the analyses from the bottom:
1. Enable R/3 connection, and maintain credentials updated on LogonDepot;
2. Active and scheduled SDF/MON or SDF/SMON tool;
3. ST12 Traces;
4. Always attach relevant information (e.g.: Steps-To-Reproduce, issue's time stamp...).
1. The R/3 connection is the only way the engineer can access your system, without it, will be almost
impossible to give some new information on the first reply.
Before opening a ticket, enable the connection.
• It is very important to maintain the authorizations of the support user, at Customer Remote
Logon Depot, which is where the engineers have access to the user/password to access the
system manually.
A "suitable support user" has at minimum the authorizations contained in role

Z_BASIC_SERVICE_V1 of Note 1405975.
For better understanding on how to enable the connection/add logon credentials to the incident, please
refer to the following SAP Notes/KBA's:
• 2281599 - SAP Remote Support Guideline
• 1773689 - How to add logon credentials (S-User ID and password) securely to an incident
• 812732 - R/3 Support service connection
2. The SDF/MON and SDF/SMON are the SAP Performance Monitor tools, that the processors use to
investigate the active work processes in the system.
It takes snapshots of every active work process, that’s why we always recommend to schedule for daily
monitoring.
The difference between SDF/MON and SDF/SMON is your SAP NetWeaver Release,
If your Release is:
> 7.4 or higher, is recommended the activation of /SMON,
> If the version is lower than 7.4, activate SDF/MON.
Here’s the KBA’s explaining how to configure and schedule the tool:
• 2651881 - How to configure SDF/SMON for performance monitoring and analysis
• 2383809 - How to configure SDF/MON for performance monitoring and analysis
3. ST12 is a tracking tool, that allows tracing a specific user, context or a transaction. Whenever possible,
we recommend the customer to reproduce the issue and record a ST12 trace for it.
Here’s a KBA explaining step-by-step how to record a trace:
• 2436955 - How to collect and analyze traces using ST12 (single transaction analysis)
4. Always attach relevant information.
Processors are there to assist you the best way possible, so every information is welcome. If related
logs to the issue, EWA, screenshots from the issue, traces that were deleted automatically are
available, we suggest attaching it to the ticket.
After following these steps, you are ready to be assisted with your performance issue.
