PHY061 PROBLEM SET #2
JUNE 25, 2024
Instructions: Answer the following problems. Show your complete solution and box your final answer. Write
neatly and legibly.
Deadline: June 28, 2024.
1. The speed of a train is reduced uniformly from 15 m/s to 7.0 m/s while traveling a distance of 90 m. (a)
Compute the acceleration. (b) How much farther will the train travel before coming to rest, provided the
acceleration remains constant?
2. An antelope moving with constant acceleration covers the distance between two points 70.0 m apart in
7.00 s. Its speed as it passes the second point is 15.0 m/s. (a) What is its speed at the first point? (b) What
is its acceleration?
3. A subway train starts from rest at a station and accelerates at a rate of 1.60 𝑚/𝑠 2 for 14.0 s. It runs at
constant speed for 70.0 s and slows down at a rate of 3.50 𝑚/𝑠 2 until it stops at the next station. Find the
total distance covered.
4. A runner travels 1.5 laps around a circular track in a time of 50 s. The diameter of the track is 40 m and
its circumference is 126 m. Find (a) the average speed of the runner and (b) the magnitude of the runner’s
average velocity.
5. A baseball is thrown straight upward on the Moon with an initial speed of 35 m/s. Compute (a) the
maximum height reached by the ball, (b) the time taken to reach that height, (c) its velocity 30 s after it
is thrown, and (d) when the ball’s height is 100 m. (𝑔 = 1.60 𝑚/𝑠 2 on the Moon)
6. A stone is thrown from the top of a building upward at an angle of 30.0° to the horizontal with an initial
speed of 20.0 m/s as shown in Figure 1. The height from which the stone is thrown is 45.0 m above the
ground. (a) How long does it take the stone to reach the ground? (b) What is the speed of the stone just
before it strikes the ground?
Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3
7. As shown in Figure 2, a ball is thrown from the top of one building toward a tall building 50 m away. The
initial velocity of the ball is 20 m/s - 40° above horizontal. How far above or below its original level will
the ball strike the opposite wall?
8. A small rock is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 18.0 m/s from the edge of the roof of a 30.0-m-
tall building. The rock doesn’t hit the building on its way back down and lands in the street below. Air
resistance can be neglected. (a) What is the speed of the rock just before it hits the street? (b) How much
time elapses from when the rock is thrown until it hits the street?
9. A baseball is thrown straight upward with a speed of 30 m/s. (a) How long will it rise? (b) How high will
it rise? (c) How long after it leaves the hand will it return to the starting point? (d) When will its speed be
16 m/s?
10. You are on the roof of the physics building, 46.0 m above the ground (Figure 3). Your physics professor
who is 1.80 m tall, is walking alongside the building at a constant speed of 1.20 m/s. If you wish to drop
an egg on your professor’s head, where should the professor be when you release the egg? Assume that
the egg is in free fall.
